Thanks for the info. I also read on another thread that the peepers can be softened in hot water and then manipulated so they fit into the nostrils without using any pliers. Might try that first before a plier purchase. But I did get the peepers and hope to have them in a couple of days.
I think I'm gonna try some of those Pinless Peepers, they look fairly humane and may help during this time of year as the chickens are cooped up. I don't really want to use them as a long term solution, but they may help for now. And if my other RIR is getting picked on too, well, I just dont...
I think my chickens are bored silly. We let them out as much as our schedules allow, but now I notice that my other RIR is looking pretty rumpled and losing feathers. I'll take a closer look at her tomorrow, but I suspect she's also getting picked on by the higher chicken in the order.
Spring...
We originally bought 4 pullets, 2 RIRs and 2 Plymouth Rocks. And then there were three......the dog snapped one day and decided she'd get one of the PRs, and she did. Poor Hester. And now when the dog is out with the chickens, she wears a muzzle.
But I will take your advisement. I'll either get...
cmom...I looked at your BYC page...looks like you have a beautiful place.
Can you please explain more to me about the Pinless Peepers? I don't quite understand how they work.
Thanks.
Thanks Biddieacres...I'm glad to know it's not just my hens, though I don't wish this on any hen. I'm optimistic about spring, even though we just got another 16 inches of snow last night...but I believe we are in the winter homestretch. Too bad for my hens that the bare patches of ground they...
Thanks again Ridgerunner....you make several good points. We're lucky that we have the space and supplies to keep them separated. It's a tad inconvenient but we're managing. They free-ranged again today with no problems (no blood), but we didn't let them stay together in the coop.
I'm gonna...
It's winter in Maine and I feel pretty cooped up myself, so I know how the hens feel.
Biddieacres.....does your picked-on hen have her own coop now? How have you handled the situation?
When the weather gets a little warmer, I think I may try to do as Coopchick said...maybe try a mini...
Thanks Ridgerunner. Believe it or not, her last isolation was for a few weeks and her comb had healed nicely. I guess she is just clearly at the bottom of the pecking order. This all started around Christmas. She was truly sick with some sort of bacterial infection so the vet put her on Baytril...
Two of our hens are picking on the third hen. We've separated her, and every time we try to re-introduce her, she gets picked on. She becomes a bloody mess, mainly her comb. So we are constantly having to isolate her. Will all three ever be able to live together again? When they are...
