Really happy with how this generation is coming along. I hatched over 100 chicks from this pen this spring and got solid pairs for probably 8 different phenotypes. Think I'm going to go with a general black based lavender pen, a black cuckoo and "ancobar" marking pen, and a duckwing pen that...

Beard/muff is a weak spot in even my pure Houdan line unfortunately, I guess that's what I had in mind when I wrote that. Some of these will definitely have this trait, that little duckwing chick is looking very promising for example and the two v-comb lavender chicks looking straight at the...

This project is coming along well. This would be f3 of this project, I suppose. Here's some of the lavender cohort. I'm loving seeing this dilution on all the other patterns--duckwing, barred and mottled in all sorts of combos. The one up front has almost everything I'm looking for in the...

First photo is the two decent double barred boys, one mottled and one recessive for mottled, second photo is a couple of backup single barred+mottled boys and a barred cream wildtype pullet that soars to be recessive for mottling. The double barred boys will be bred to both Houdan and cream...

Side note, I found these Australian Houdans that I believe to be cuckoo+mottled.

I was just thinking I really should get out there and get some photos! As expected, I've had a huge range in the phenotype of the chicks. I'm finding myself most attracted to the black mottled/barred chicks, the wildtype ones are...not appealing to me and I have none that are wildtype + mottled...

They're laying the prettiest glossy blue eggs and I'm looking forward to setting my first hatch this week.

Dedication! I called it quits for choring and dinner long before then! These are helpful, though. Thank you.

Did you see any way in which these barred+mottled chicks on black/blue could be autosexing? Even based on the juveniles, doesn't seem to be obvious. Guess i really will have to go for e+. Still seems like mottling would only serve to reduce sexability in chicks rather than improve it.

I was thinking the same thing and doing the same thing 😂😂😂 So far no luck!

To be honest, that's kind of why I'm wondering why the Ancobar is often mentioned as autosexing. I have had had BR lines that were as easy to sex at hatch as my lt brown leghorns or anything crele, but it's DEFINITELY something that has to be selected for. With the down patterns of mottled...

It's a fair point and probably will guide me towards a preference for the wildtype base with the lavender.

Hmm. Hopefully we shall see. As long as there's enough definition to sex at hatch I really don't care too much about adult plumage appearance. I happen to like the gray color of lavender, though. Is not at all white to me, they're very clearly different next to each other to my eye. I imagine...

How would there be less contrast than with 55 Flowery or Ancobars? Are you saying the lavender color is too pale?

In my birds? They're f1 crosses between a lavender legbar and a mottled houdan, single barred and split to mottle. Pretty much what I was expecting. The next generation should be very diverse and I expect we should begin to see the mostly white males and colored females at that point.

Why are you having trouble getting mottled birds? It's not an easy pattern to perfect, but it's a simple recessive trait. Nothing too complicated about it. Do you just mean with your specific birds, are you having losses or something? What breed?

Lavender barred and mottled. I don't really care if we wind up going with a black base or wild-type base, I'll just see what hatches next year and let that guide me.

I will likely be selecting for anything mottled and lavender first round. I haven't decided if I want to do e+ or E yet, actually. I may let this year's hatching determine it. I've been looking for photos of "Ancobars" to see what the pattern actually looks like in black, but I haven't been able...

I wound up with two f1 pairs this year. It was a rough year, for sure, and I ultimately only hatched from one Houdan hen and then most of what I hatched wound up being from the bantam Columbian rock I'd had running around in general population for a while. (Ooops.) The pullets are really pretty...

So probably if I hatch enough out to have a good group of lavender f2 birds, i should be able to mix and match them to work towards all the traits in the same f3 birds? Now, IF i decide i definitely want to retain the blue egg gene, what do you think about a second crested mottled lavender line...
