I love pullets. They are so adorable when they are at that age! What breed do you have? Have you raised them since they were chicks? I have 5 adult Orpington hens and 5 chicks (which are 1 week old). Hi there Animal Madd!

Australians - Where are you all????

MyHaven, Only 5 little bubs. No more chicks hatched. All the other eggs started smelling bad, so I removed them from the nest today. I decided to see how the two hens would go sharing the playpen with the chicks. They seem fine. Chicks have been moving from one hen to another, both are showing...

Australians - Where are you all????

Yes, I candled. Well, I tried. I couldn't see anything. It was pretty much all dark inside the eggs. These are brown eggs, so I'm not sure if the colour affects the candling. I used a little pocket flashlight and took the eggs inside my wardrobe, which was dark.

Australians - Where are you all????

Yes, MyHaven! We had a latecomer yesterday afternoon. I couldn't believe it. The young chick is doing well. The other 4 older chicks have been getting cheeky, eating and moving about. Mums are still sitting on the eggs so we thought we'd give them another day and see if any more hatch by...

Thanks for your advice, guys. I've removed the empty egg shells. Haven't candled the eggs yet. I will try to do it later today, as it's getting dark now... Still only 4 babies, and they are getting more active.

Australians - Where are you all????

So far 4 chicks and 8 eggs unhatched. What to do with the unhatched eggs???? Here are the details: I've got 2 hens sitting on different set of eggs (each hen in its own broody box). The eggs were set at the same time, on the 31st October. 1st chick hatched on the 20th November in the...

Australians - Where are you all????

Lots of good ideas on recycling! Thanks. I'm not planning on hatching chicks all the time, so I don't need anything fancy. My partner, though, wants to build a "TajMahal" so that's why it's taking so long to get things done for the chooks! I will try to put something together tomorrow with...

Australians - Where are you all????

I wish I lived in QLD so I could borrow your coop. Thanks for the offer. My partner got some pallets today, so we will try to make a run/coop for mums and babies. I have a lot of "love handles", so I love my fluffy Orpingtons, because they look like me. Chubby thighs, round body! I have seen...

MyHaven, I live in the Dandenong Ranges, 1hr and a half east of Melbourne, in Victoria. The lovely hen in my avatar is my Buff Orpington Rosie. She is 2 years old now and the most adorable sweetie. Her sisters are Milly (who is broody with 8 eggs) and Lucy. Below is a photo of them scratching at...

Australians - Where are you all????

Hi My Haven, I can't wait to see what my mums will be like when their chicks hatch next week. I reckon I will spend the whole day with a chair outside watching their behaviour! Teila, I forgot to thank you for showing pics of your coops and run. Did you buy them from Bunnings? My partner keeps...

Australians - Where are you all????

Thanks for explaining your set-up. I'm trying to build a large run and re-arrange the coop for my hens and the new babies. Do you have a photo of your run with the 2 hutches?

Australians - Where are you all????

Hi Teila, How cute your babies! I'm hoping my broodies will have some babies hatching next week. Do you keep mum and babies in a separate hutch inside your main coop (with other hens)? I love your idea of cooking up breakfasts and freezing for during the week. Good preparation!!!
