Native galliforms in our region (turkeys, grouse, bobwhite, etc.) all lay 6-18 eggs a year, and they persevere 🤷♀️ In fact, that 6-18 eggs/year seems to pop up with a lot of bird types. Jungle fowl, many kinds of ducks, ostriches in the wild, and so on. So maybe that's the source there.
