Tim I really was considering breeding lights and showing. I was undecided as to breeding a qualifying color vs non-qualifying because when I decide to do something like this I'm very serious about it. I don't know what I did to offend you in the first place but I apologize for being 'snarky'.
I wasn't really thinking about the 'new colors' but I'm sure there are some that meet, or with good breeding will soon meet, the standard. I was actually thinking about 'lights' and the undercolor in the lights. It seems (in my limited experience) that there are three undercolors in the lights...
Search 'pasty butt' for a lot of reading on this subject. In the meantime be sure to keep their vents clean or they could die. Dirty feathers are OK as long as the vent is clear. I've found that it stops in a few days with no treatment other than wiping butts as long as they have good food and...
I meant that I've never seen an all red Brahma, but I don't get out much either.

Not in this barnyard. Buckeyes are too high maintenance. I don't have the time to measure millimeters of undercolor on each feather and such ......but you let me know how it works out for you.
I hate to see a bad report on this breed. Guess I'm fortunate that my birds are nothing like that. Well, maybe they're a little messy.
OK, they're a lot messy but I still love Brahmas.
I sold mine for $15....that's probably what I had in him for feed, vitamins, etc. It was worth it to me to see him go to a good home and $15 was more than what he was worth as dinner....I can buy a chicken in the store for half that.
Debs55, Tim may be right but then again you might get lucky. Last fall I culled almost all of my cockerels for bad attitude but kept one LF light because he was such a nice bird (in attitude not appearance). This spring I sold him at a swap to a young couple who just fell in love with him. I...
I had the same thing happen and also thought that it was genetic until I talked to a friend, who is a vet, about it. If I remember right, he said the breeder may have fed too much calcium when they were young and damaged their parathyroid gland. While I had them I supplemented D3 to help with...
I have Brahma history questions that maybe someone here can answer or point me in the right direction to do more research.
When I was trying to decide what breed of chicken to get to start a new flock, I read everything I could online and at the library about Brahmas...not really much info out...
I started a flock of Brahmas last summer...couldn't find a local breeder so I got 14 lights and 12 darks from McMurray. The chicks were all healthy but the differences between the two colors was like night and day. The lights were all larger and very laid back...not much fighting and they were...
I never thought about the roosts being too low but maybe that's the problem because they don't use their wings at all and seem to land hard.
Thank you both.
