Definitely sounds at least in part that he's molting. When ducks molt its like an explosion of feathers and is quite alarming the first time because it looks like a duck got massacred haha. If there's no sores probably not much to worry about I would guess.

I've never heard of this before but could the hen be mounting him or attacking him? Just the location makes me think he's being grabbed you know?
