Incubating in the winter - doable or crazy?

Adorable! I wish I had a broody to help me out, but it's just me. My spring chickens haven't even started laying yet :hmm

Incubating in the winter - doable or crazy?

I set the eggs this morning! This is actually happening. If anybody wants to follow along and play the guessing game, you can check out the thread over here: Emergency winter hatch thread (Partridge Orpington x Easter Egger) 🥚🐣🐥

Incubating in the winter - doable or crazy?

Thanks for the information! Genetics is such a fascinating field, and such a fun rabbit hole to get lost into on the internet :D I used to read a lot about cat genetics and horse genetics, now I need to read up more on chickens as well.

Incubating in the winter - doable or crazy?

Here are some pictures! The mother of the eggs is the Ameraucana. Her eggs are a beautiful green color. Our boy’s favorite was her underage daughter next to her though, and she’s not laying yet. So we’ll see if he managed to get some action with mom as well 😄 I’ll be setting the eggs tomorrow...

Incubating in the winter - doable or crazy?

Thank you! The mama of the eggs is an ameraucana, but it turns out it was her mixed breed daughter that was his favorite, and she’s not laying yet (spring chick). He loved the mama, too, but, being older, she was pickier and bossier and wouldn’t always let him. So we don’t actually know how many...

Incubating in the winter - doable or crazy?

Thank you! Looks don't matter, I want them to be sweet and friendly like him :D He just had the best personality. So tame and patient, curious, smart, goofy and entertaining to have around. That's part of why we want babies from him. The sentimental attachment aside, he was just a great pet...

Incubating in the winter - doable or crazy?

Thanks! I just added one to the original post. He was such a handsome boy, and so sweet till the end, even at 7 months!

Incubating in the winter - doable or crazy?

Thanks for the advice! The kids will be fine - our last hatch was a 50/50 chance because the eggs were shipped, and indeed we did lose 50%, then we had to butcher all but one of the males after they grew up, so by now the kids are accustomed to the cycle of life side of things. The goal is to...

Incubating in the winter - doable or crazy?

Thanks for the input! The temperature in that hallway is fairly stable. I had to do a lot of tweaks to the incubator last time, had it wrapped in blankets and what not, because it’s just a finicky styrofoam thing. But I had a good hatch rate regardless. I’m planning on setting 10 eggs or so.

Incubating in the winter - doable or crazy?

I wasn't planning on this and recognize that it's not ideal or even recommended, but these are unusual circumstances. So, our favorite chicken died for no apparent reason, the family is very sad and we have one last chance to have him "live on" though his progeny. I don't know if it's possible...
