Sick hen - trying to diagnose so we can treat her

I just wanted to let you know, after coming back to this post by accident today, that our hen lived for many happy years after I started this conversation. We got her a small coop with an attached run that we placed next to the big coop, within the larger run. She lived in there happily for many...

Sick hen - trying to diagnose so we can treat her

I'm so sorry for your loss. Our girl is doing okay. No signs of swelling or being eggbound. She is happy to eat again today, but only if we hold the food up to her and help her get started. For some reason, she isn't eating on her own, even though we put her old baby feeder in the crate...

Sick hen - trying to diagnose so we can treat her

She has lost weight, but other than that, she looks and feels normal. We are feeding her the crumbles dry, with some layer pellets mixed in and I also added some grit, just in case, since she's not been eating normally or getting any grit - but she's not drinking a ton. We will probably give...

Sick hen - trying to diagnose so we can treat her

Good news - Our hen started eating on her own today! It took a great deal of encouragement from our daughter, but the hen had a good breakfast of grower crumbles this morning. If she keeps eating, we'll try working in some of her layer pellets and see how she does with those. Fingers crossed...

Sick hen - trying to diagnose so we can treat her

Update: No real change as of now. She's taking a bit more food (40-45 CCs, 2x a day) and keeping her eyes open longer. Still can't entice her to eat or drink on her own. Talking with vet again today and will ask about possible parasites as well as the bloods and xrays.

Sick hen - trying to diagnose so we can treat her

Thanks, all. This is helpful and I appreciate the input. We've upped her feedings from 35 ccs to 40 yesterday and will go to 45 tonight. She is tolerating it fine. Still not eating or drinking on her own, but opening her eyes a bit more often and alert. I'm also going to ask the vet about...

Sick hen - trying to diagnose so we can treat her

They were wormed fairly recently with a pelleted wormer. I will have vet double check her for worms, but I'm not seeing any (as I did in the past, before worming). The flock eats a complete layer pellet supplemented with some grains for treats daily and occasional fresh fruits or veggies; they...

Sick hen - trying to diagnose so we can treat her

Thanks for your post. She has no injuries that we can find, no discharge, no bubbles and no masses - nothing that we can see or feel. Her eyes are shut, but when she opens them they seem to be pretty normal looking. The vet said they looked swollen, but I'm not sure I agree. She is a...

Sick hen - trying to diagnose so we can treat her

We have a sick hen and are trying to find ways to help her. We raised her from a chick and she is about 8 months old. Her breed is a light brahma. About 2 weeks ago, we noticed that her eyes were closed and she was lethargic. This lasted about a day and a half before we took her inside to...
