very injured duck in need of help

the vet was real nice and and explained the options. unfortunately the hole was in her esophagus and not crop, the esophagus is near impossible to repair properly. he explained why and said that even if i was able or willing to pay for hundreds (minimum) of possible surgical repairs there was no...

very injured duck in need of help

got a good look at the wound during her bath today, except for the hole the rest seems just about healed already. there is a small scabby looking section about the size of the hole near the top of the wound but the rest seems to have a thin layer of skin now or at least looks like it does (no...

very injured duck in need of help

Ok, got an appointment for her tomorrow morning. Ended up going with the vet that had the $1 exam coupon. None of them would give me a estimate on how much anything more then the exam would cost. So at the very least I'll be getting a vet's opinion of her wound and progress.

would need a way to immobilize her without a helper to do that. if i have to fight her to get a bandage on or off just think how hard doing any work on it would be while shes conscious.

very injured duck in need of help

after more scouring of the local vet listings i found a second that might treat pet birds, nothing saying either way on their site though. since both are already closed for the weekend i sent email inquries to both and will follow up with with calling each on monday morning. also sent one to the...

very injured duck in need of help

The problems I'm seeing with trying to close it myself is that first she needs to get knocked out or sedated and I haven't found a safe way of doing that (I know that even at a vet there is risk doing it (more so with birds and small critters) but compared to the DIY it's safe). Second after...

very injured duck in need of help

Been doing searches of the nearby vets, found one that might look at birds but the little info their site has on it refers only to parrot type birds. The other big problem in the way of having a vet at least look at her is the cost. As I believe I mentioned in one of the first posts for this...

very injured duck in need of help

Was very fidgety both when trying to get a photo and re bandaging. Again only got one photo over about 5 min of trying to get her to hold still long enough to focus and shoot. Oh and she's started trying to remove her bandage on her own, she works the end loose and then keeps tugging on it. She...

very injured duck in need of help

Well the hole is definitely either in the crop or on the way to it. Just put her in for a bath, had a bit more compacted food in the bandage today with a lot of drooling lately. Her entire scab fell off after a few dunks and she promptly ate it. Within a few seconds a small piece came out of...

very injured duck in need of help

for sedation, id need something thats safe to do at home without access to monitoring equipment and such. i tried lavender when i had to calm a guinea pig to treat a full body infestation of mites (treatment was olive oil with a little tea tree oil to get rid of them), the lavender actually made...

very injured duck in need of help

shes been spitting up a bit today again, but i think most of it was accidental. she spent at least an hour where she decided to drink from the water bowl which was as ground level while standing on the nest box. she could reach but every time she ended up with a mouth of slime to deal with. she...

very injured duck in need of help

i wouldnt know about brave, more like just hoping for the best and expecting the worst. never had a scab come off so soon after forming, but then ive never seen this kind of scab form so quickly before either. as for closing it up, i cant tell if thats the inside or outside of the crop that i...

very injured duck in need of help

gave her a bath today and the scab over her crop gave way. a good sized chunk of compressed food fell out (about the size of the last segment of my thumb) and the majority of the scab there also came off (well sort of fell to shreds then fell off). the flesh underneath is a nice healthy pink but...

very injured duck in need of help

well the chicken got put back on her side of the divider when i found them together. since they got along fine would it be safe to remove it and give both a bit more room? its just a matter of cutting a few zip ties and removing the panel to open it back up.

very injured duck in need of help

i havent seen any leakage in the bandage except a tiny bit once or twice about a week ago. not sure how she did it cause her side of the pen is entirely covered (duck side isnt, but its just over 2ft high), but this morning i came out to see my penned chicken in with my duck. they were getting...

very injured duck in need of help

gave her supplemented feed like suggested (layer pellets, a little cat food, leafy greens, and a bit of left over bell pepper for a bit of extra vitamin c, all soaked and minced in a chopper so its all tiny bits). since i gave it to her this morning she has periodically stopped whatever she was...
