So Friday we got 7 eggs, that is our max so far. All looked familiar except on. So now I'm thinking maybe they just aren't all laying yet. That said, 2-3 of them are large enough and consistent enough that maybe they were on a nest. No one has laid a repeat of the pink egg we found in the yard...
I wish my dog would be useful for anything but opening the doors and running up the electric bill or opening the pantry and helping himself. He's clearly smart..... He's just a jerk. Lol
Thank you!! This is so helpful!!
The cuckoo Marans for sure lays a medium brown egg. I've gone in right after she lays. I'm 90% certain the prairie blue bell lays a blue green egg because I went into the nest box right after she exited. Also mostly sure both EEs are laying green-blue eggs but...
Does anyone have any guesses on who laid the light brown speckles egg? And do you all agree that the three eggs were laid by 3 different hens or are the two dark brown speckled eggs from the same? The one on the bottom of the pictured three eggs was not laid yesterday, it was from a previous...
So the below pics are of the 6 we got today. The marked up picture shows what I think layed it: bfcm= blue french copper Marans; cm = cuckoo Marans; sg = sapphire gem; BB = prairie blue bell. Ee a given.
Ok so today we got 6 eggs! More than we've ever gotten! Usually we get 4, 5 max....
As far as new eggs go, the light speckled egg is new. I'm assuming three different hens layed these three eggs?
Thank you and this is my plan. They didn't have access to their nest box cuz I didn't realize anybody was laying already so I had it pinned over so they wouldn't get used to roasting in there and then I opened it up and most of them were laying in there for sure. Like there's at least half of...
I don't know. All but one or two are reported to be squatting by my daughter. The buff Orpington and the Polish don't squat. I thought the BO did though so might revisit tomorrow.
I seem to have suddenly realized they're definitely at that "just starting to lay" stage. The ones who are laying...
I looked up eggs of speckled Sussex earlier and they showed them being speckled... Now a search says they're light brown.
Maybe the speckled egg belongs to the Bielefelder?
Also, I didn't think heat would impact newly laying hens, but maybe it has. They're all just at 5 months maybe a bit...
Well they're about to spend their mornings penned up! The have an 8x16 run, plus 7.5x5.5 area under the coop and the same floor space again in the coop, plus the nest boxes. Should be enough space. They just aren't used to it. Kids will let them out at 4 when they get home from school!!
To hey have 4 boxes. They use the bottom two (I need to work on that part) I had cov red them with a sheet. They like it a lot better but they don't utilize the top two)
Ok so here is the last 2+ weeks of eggs.
I have a very mixed flock of chickens. 1 of each speckled Sussex, buff Orpington, buff brahma, prairie Bluebell, Bielefelder, salmon Faverolle, cuckoo Marans, Sapphire gem, polish, and the mystery chicken that I'm now sure is a blue french copper Marans...
They few that are consistently laying in the coop are doing it daily. We even left for four days and came home to 14 eggs. So they didn't eat those ones.
I've been watching them all morning and don't see them going anywhere. I heard a bunch of egg song (from 2-3 hens) this morning but no eggs...
I'm guessing they're laying somewhere I can't find. And I'm guessing the only solution is to trap them in the coop a few days. But maybe you guys have tips in how to find a nest?
I've seen 2 eggs that were dark black copper Marans ish (I don't have a BCM). This was two weeks ago so I know she's...
