Good dual purpose breeds for meat?

My Comets are far from flighty and I have to give credit for that to my son. The moment that we go outside every chicken in the whole place dual purpose or not comes out of the woodwork running at you and demanding attention. I feel bad for the person that doesn't realize there are chickens...

Good dual purpose breeds for meat?

Definitely...I don't know about SLW because I have never had those but have done Barred Rocks and Hampshires that we have gotten from farmers in there area. Not sure what they feed them but boy they were big. We got Comets last year to add new layers and I am still kicking myself for it. At the...

Good dual purpose breeds for meat?

That was my intent as well but I hatched out 7, 5 of which were roos and only 2 were hens. I kept the two hens who turned out beautiful and kept one of the roosters so that will be my start for this year. They are laying now so I am just waiting for the eggs to get big enough to start hatching...

Good dual purpose breeds for meat?

He looks amazing. I ended up with a trio from what I hatched last summer and they are amazing. The girls are so sweet and Little Nicki (while he gets himself in trouble often) is really sweet and very comical. Body wise they look bigger than my egg layers but smaller than my Brahmas. The funny...

Good dual purpose breeds for meat?

Quote: This has been my plan all along once I convert over to a DP flock. They taste the same, but I don't want to be incubating any meat type x layer type breeding. I only want to hatch meat type x meat type. I figure they do it for sex link chicks why not identify which eggs go to the...

Good dual purpose breeds for meat?

Quote: i am along the lake on the western side of michigan, and our winters sound about like yours (as in cold from nov til about april), and i agree. if you're hardly feeding them 3/4 of the year, having to only feed them without relying on foraging for only 1/4 of the year isn't too bad...

Good dual purpose breeds for meat?

Quote: What about in the winter? That can be a long time in some climates. I live in Vermont which is definitely cold from about December through April. I know the chickens do eat more during the winter but since they are eating next to nothing now I think it balances out well. I am feeding...

Good dual purpose breeds for meat?

Quote: I think your right. When I convert to a dual purpose flock Id put my efforts on getting a meatier type bird too. If I was in LilyD's position Id have the Dels with the focus towards a more meaty frame and good growth and I'd just keep an extra layer hen or 3 whatever your needs are...

Good dual purpose breeds for meat?

I am creating one coop that will be exclusive to breeding Delawares and my second coop will be primarily for eggs. i will want the Dellys to produce eggs so that I can hatch them for my kitchen but I will not be relying on them for my egg laying. Looking at costs as far as I was concerned I...

Quote: I second that lol we are on our third batch and they poop too much and are disgusting...They do taste good though. I have the same feelings you do I just can't do them any more. I want healthy chickens who are happy and getting into trouble while we are waiting to eat them lol. I...
