Missing without a trace, 4 in a week

Our next-door neighbors have free range chickens, too. I checked with them to see if they had lost a yellow chicken. Indeed, they had lost a number of chickens over the last two weeks. They said they had become complacent, and didn't always close up their coops at night. A raccoon got in...

Missing without a trace, 4 in a week

We had some time to search the brush for feathers and came across signs of 3 chickens in about a 20 foot diameter area. The largest group of feathers was from a very light tan colored bird, and we doubt it is one of ours. Our neighbor has chickens, and it might be one of theirs. The other two...

Some good news and some bad. First, the good. It turns out that the last hen to disappear was not a victim, she has gone broody. To our delight, we discovered she had made a nest in an old horse feeder high on a sheet metal wall inside our horse shed. Unfortunately, we also found a second...

Missing without a trace, 4 in a week

The thought that this might be a coyote is very troubling. We have 2 goats in a pen about 100 feet from the 'feather' site. We have had goats there for 10 years without any trouble from coyotes.

Missing without a trace, 4 in a week

We found what was left of the last hen to disappear. No carcass or bones, just scattered feathers. The location was deep in some brush. It has been 3 or 4 days since the bird disappeared, so I'm not sure much can be deduced, but it wasn't a bird of prey that got it. One of the suggestions a...

Missing without a trace, 4 in a week

Over the last week, we have lost 4 of 16 chickens: 1 rooster and 3 hens. All were full grown. All free range. Each has vanished without a trace. One vanished within a 2 hour period between early dusk and 1 hour after dark. One night we thought we had lost two, but a hen (buttercup) emerged...
