It was just shy of 1/2 cup. I couldn't believe something like that came out of a chicken. She's had 4 monsters so far. Luckily nothing in the last couple weeks, so I'm hoping it has stopped. They are too fat to fit in a carton, and if they did, they'd be too tall for the carton to close.
I need to get a gram scale. I go the liquid measurement route. One large egg is 1/4 cup. It takes 2 eggs from my Speckled Sussex to make a 1/4 cup. They are cute little things, but they look pretty silly in a carton next to L-XL eggs. I keep theirs for myself, along with any that are too big to...
As I stated in an earlier post, they are on the roost by 4pm this time of year.
By 4:30, you can't see what you're doing in the coop, and total dark by 5. As the days get longer, the light gets adjusted.
Yes. Mine is in a timer. It turns in at 1am and turns off at 8am. By 8am, its daylight, so there's no reason to have it on.When it comes on at 1am, they think it is morning. Then, in the evening, they go to bed like normal. The goal is to make them think there is more daylight than there really is.
My speckled sussex didn't lay until almost 30 weeks. Chances are they need more light. I have a light that comes on at 1am. They are on the roost by 4pm, this time of year. Without supplemental light, I wouldn't expect them to lay until spring.
