Look what I found waiting for me when I went to do nightly rounds!!! She has 2 more eggs under her...one of those hatched is an ultra dark marans - I'm tickled pink because I have not had much luck hatching those in the incubator
I wish I had kept better track of the dates. I feel like some should be close...next time I will pencil the set date on each egg. Ha! Did you hear that? I just said “next time”...proving that I am an addict alright. It IS exciting seeing them all sitting there, making tiny lives happen. Of the...
Ok, relocated two more hens to a large doghouse and a large dog crate covered with a tarp to the transition pen aka “the maternity ward” which now has 3 hens and one duck. While moving one nest I dropped a Marans egg and cracked it pretty badly - shell only though.:barnieI immediately carried it...
Last night I candled the eggs under each hen to check for viability. Even the EE/ Americana eggs under the “doghouse hen” - the one I keep finding off and on the wrong nest - seem to be doing well despite her being off the nest more than I would have thought was healthy. I took any eggs that...

Now a buff Polish has decided she wants in on the action too. She stole the nest with the marans eggs. I think I should kick her out before things get too crazy. Oh, wait...too late. My nest boxes look like a maternity ward, a row of flat dinner plate chickens with a faraway look in their eyes...
It's like I have this sickness where I can't help but keep shoving eggs under broody chickens. The Welsummer has the 12 Marans now, the Marans has 8 EE/ Americauna, the black hen and Cookie have duck eggs. And the Phoenix has 6 or 8 but the pencil marks have worn off so I'm not sure if there are...
So I started off with one broody hen, a little phoenix, who wisely chose to brood in the new hen house which has no nest boxes. I built a little impromptu nest box around her and so far she has 4 fertile eggs she is cooking. All good. No one bothers her.
Then another hen went broody in the old...
