Quote: Wow what a success story! At first I read it too fast and thought the incubator had been unplugged the whole time! How is that little baby? I've got my second hatch in the Hovabator, due end of the month. Out of 10 eggs, I got two blood rings at 7 days. Hope the rest of them do okay...

Quote: I haven't done it myself yet, but I have read that some people use that plastic craft needle punch stuff. I can't remember what it is called, but it has holes in it. Others use strawberry containers or even mesh bags. Good luck! Oh great idea! Plastic canvas I call it--and I think I...

Dividing Hovabator? Does anyone divide the incubator in any way to keep track of which breed of chicks hatch? I sorted my eggs out but didn't realize the new chicks would play soccer and roll the eggs all around. For this next hatch I'm wondering about putting some kind of plastic or cardboard...

Just finished my first "test run" hatch. I turned eggs twice daily before setting and used an electric turner in the incubator. On Day 18 I candled and had 12 viable eggs. I put 6 under a broody hen and kept 6 in the incubator. Only three hatched--days 20, 21, and 22 (another one had pipped and...

Is it normal for hatches to spread out over several days? Today is day 22. We had one chick hatch on day 20, one on day 21, and still no sign from 3 eggs that were viable on day 18. Six more went under a broody on day 18 and no peeps heard there either.

Quote: Any updates mrs. Mucket? What did you get your humidity at? Any hatched yet.? I think you have another day or two? Yes we have a chick! It pipped last night about 7 PM and hatched about 12 hours later. The humidity went down to 70 on my hygrometer but no condensation on the lid. The...

I just talked to someone at the Hovabator manufacturer. He said it's almost impossible to get 89% humidity in the 1588 and my hygrometer might be off but it should be up at eggtop level (like the thermometers). I had it propped against the side. And I had put water in the third trough--a no-no...

Quote: With humidity too high you will get sticky chicks. They are so sticky they can't rotate around in the shell to zip. Personally, I prefer humidity no higher than 60-65* during lockdown or I get sticky chicks. 60 is best for me. Kathy--How can I lower the humidity? Remove some water from...

HIGH HUMIDITY: I locked down in my 1588 last night and this morning the humidity is still at 86. Will that be a problem? Temp is 98.4.

What should you see when candling at Day 18? I want to give my broody some eggs that look viable and keep the rest in the incubator. Last time I looked some were just solid dark with an air cell at the end. These are light brown eggs.

Quote: I had them in a room that stayed around 60 F. I didn't know that I should check humidity. I turned the eggs a couple of times a day, propping up one side of the carton and then the other. Now that the house will be warming up in spring/summer, I'm going to see if I can adjust my egg...

Quote: Keep an eye on your humidity gauge. I have had to remove the button as the humidity gets too high once hatching starts. During my last hatch I took it out once the first chick hatched and the humidity went too high. I had 47 out of 48 hatch. Everything else looks good. I like to...

Tomorrow is lockdown in my Genesis 1588. Is this all I have to do? Remove turner. Lay eggs on mesh floor. Fill all water troughs. Then close lid till first chicks are dry? And don't open the red vent button till the last chick has hatched? Anything else?

Quote: Question for those who incubate different breeds together: Do the chicks will stay next to their own shells for a while so you can tell who is who? Or do you have to be able to ID them by eye? My chicks will look very similar but I did mark the shells.

Quote: Mrs. Mucket... I candled again today. I could tell/see development in most of my eggs this time...however, I have 3 that I think quit developing early on...they aren't as big or dark as the others and although I don't see a blood ring...the dark area floats when I turn the egg. I should...

Quote: Fifelake, I set my eggs on March 9, and remember a couple of days ago I couldn't see much either? Last night the dark spots, veins, and motion were all more visible. Can you bring yourself to candle again in a couple of days? It is really exciting to see! Were all of yours good? I...

Very exciting to hear about everyone's eggs and pips and chicks!! Genesis 1588 users: Does anyone have a simple way to see the water level in the center trough, especially with a turner in place? When lifting the turner to check the water, I sometimes dislodge a turner bar or an egg.
