Metal in soil - Need a new run

Right, "after years." The idea i was responding to was an immediate removal of soil and replacing it or the immediate addition of wood chips. I do a lot of the same in my juvenile bird's run. I use the scraps from splitting wood, pine needles from the yard, and leaves that accumulate in the...

Metal in soil - Need a new run

Our local waste convenience center used to offer free mulch but they don't any more. Landscape companies around here are happy to sell it to you but its definitely not free. I live 45 min away and up and over 2 mountains from the nearest landscape company/supply store and will burn more in gas...

Metal in soil - Need a new run

How big is the run? For example a 200sf run at 8" deep equals 134 cf of wood chips. Thats about 65 bags @ almost $5 a bag. I would invest my time and sweat equity to be sure there is even a problem before investing that kind of dough into something on which my chickens will poop.

Metal in soil - Need a new run

Is it boredom? Or they just find a soft spot and keep hitting it? My adults are free range but my pullets (2mos -4mos) and cockerels are in a coop & run set up. I provided them a 2ft x 4ft x 4in deep "sandbox" for dusting and they love it. Ive seen no other evidence of digging anywhere...

Metal in soil - Need a new run

My soil is so hard i can balance myself on a shovel (im 250lbs) and barely scratch the surface. Go down below topsoil and if you take a piece of the orange clay and let it dry, you need a hammer to break it. But my brahmas dust themselves under their elevated coop, on the ground in the wood...

Metal in soil - Need a new run

I have never had a chicken dig a hole that deep. They dust themselves in same areas and the "holes" are never more than a 1-2" depression max. Is it normal for a chicken to dig 6"+ down? Our soil is terrible. So do mine not go that deep because of the level of difficulty?

Metal in soil - Need a new run

Are you sure this is necessary? Think of the simplest solutions first. If your concerned about heavy metal contamination, take a sample and have it analyzed. Its not that expensive and will provide peace of mind. Second, take a garden tiller or cultivator in there and tear up the soil...
