What part of the country are you in PirateGirl? I'm in WY and we got several inches of snow last night. Took my girls a few hours before they worked up the nerve to come out of their coop, lol.

I just got this bowl and an outlet that turns on/off depending on outside temps from Amazon. Thank you for posting, I think my upcoming winter just got easier (at least as far as taking care of the chickens go)!

Thanks for mentioning which specific heated bowl you use. I was just looking at Amazon and they have quite a few to choose from. I only have 5 girls so I think that size would be good.

I haven't used one but have read other members mention them as being helpful. That's what I plan to use as my fallback. Will probably have to order one online as we don't have any in the few stores we have around here.
