Sorry I didn’t see this sooner.
If your talking about like plant hardiness zones I am in zone 10a or 10b
Yes it is kept outside.
They seemed to do fine through the winter for me but it didn’t get below 35°F here
For anyone still wondering they are still doing amazing even after many bedding changes I just collected a ton but this was nowhere near as many as there was in total this is only what I could really catch. They are much smaller than normal pet store ones but still kinda big.
They are still alive or more beetles than I can count haven’t seen any worms lately but it’s been cold but everything is still going good if I can remember I’ll get you pics Tomorrow
Well I got my first small harvest of mealworms from the cage wasn’t even any where near the amount I actually saw but it’s how many I got there is exactly 45 in there and I will try to get some more later.
I have their average weights that they have been in the last little while and will weigh 1 to 2 times a month and if they shows signs of gaining weight I will completely change out their soil.
My quail are in a two story metal cage on my screened in fully concrete balcony so I don’t have to worry about them eating wood luckily. Once I build their new cage I’m prob gonna have to seal the wood.
I’m surprised by
#1 they didn’t get eaten in the first couple of days as I only put like 15 in a cage of 5
#2 they were able to survive and breed with no food source other than maybe quail feed and in such dry conditions as I live in Florida and the dirt is as dry as can be.
Yeah that is true when I feed them mealworms (which I haven’t in a month because mealworms have gone seriously up in price where I live $13 for 200 small mealworms) but they each only eat around 5-7 then don’t take anymore so I don’t know how much I should worry. These whatever they are are...
Ok that’s what I was thinking I’m hoping they are mealworms because that is why I threw them in there I was hoping they would breed and it seems like they did and there is hundreds to thousands it seem of the little mealworm larvae.
I was able to get a video of some and I am almost 100% sure they are mealworms they have the stripes near thier heads and they have the two little antenna poking out of thier heads.
Ok I’m not sure but I just went to turn my soul in my quail cages I found some beetles that look kinda like darkling beetles and some larvae that look like tiny mealworms.
-I did throw a bunch of meal worms in there about a month ago I turn the soil every 2-5 days as needed and scoop and add...
