Yes we're on a farm and had ours fenced in to a pond too. But a couple drowned - runners can't fly and they had more difficulty getting out of the pond than other ducks. So we transferred them to a yard with all day access to a paddling pool which they seem to enjoy !
Well just to update you all.........3 days into sitting on the new clutch, she's decided to abandon the nest !! I found the eggs cold this afternoon.
I guess she's realised she's exhausted from sitting for nearly 30 days and wanted a break :) or maybe she's trying to get a bigger clutch...
Thank you. She's in a routine where about twice a day she runs off the nest, eats and drinks and bathes in a paddling pool of water (she's a runner they don't really like deep water). Then she seems happy to stay on her nest all day (whilst the other 7 go around in a group outside). Sometimes...
@Miss Lydia @Colley12 @cheezenkwackers Just to update you, we got to day 28 and then waited a few more days but nothing hatched. I candled the eggs, some were in different stages of development. One egg seemed nearly full but she'd kicked it out of the nest for some reason and it was cold...
@Miss Lydia @cheezenkwackers @Colley12
Update.....another duck has become broody and is helping her sit on the nest - the two of them are doing it together now !! Never had a broody duck and now two - is it catching ?!
I wonder whether that's because it's currently 23F (-5C) at night ? Do...
@cheezenkwackers wow that's amazing, gives me hope thank you !
I guess I'm more worried than I might be because I hatched out some Pekin Bantam chicks last year in a poor quality incubator I bought online and the temperature wasn't quite right. Only 3 of 12 hatched and those 3 were deformed...
@Miss Lydia you're right ! I've had runners for a while now and this is the first one that's ever got broody ! I've always hatched my runners under a Pekin Bantam until now !
My runner duck has laid a clutch of 8 eggs and been sitting well the last 3 days on a nest in the barn.
Today we had high winds and the barn door slammed and she was locked out from her nest for a period of time - could have been a few minutes but could have been as long as 2 1/2 hours until...
