-Chickens are not actually members of the pheasant family ( for more on that topic ). They are about as related to the pheasant family as the weasel family is related to the cat family. The Junglefowl is closely related Francolins and Bamboo Partridge, and more distantly related to Chukar...

Very true. As a rule, milo (sorghum) and proso millet, really any millets are unlikely to be GM. On that same topic, I don't know of much of any non-GM soy unfortunately.

It depends what you decide to make your scratch grain with. I personally use canary seed, milo and millet...

I think you said that all beautifully.
I've spent some time in refugee camps over the years and it's during these times that I've come to deeply appreciate those supplies of dehydrated eggs produced by chickens maintained on GM crops and dehydrated milk produced by cows maintained on...
Chicken Digestive System
The digestive system of the chicken - general structure
The fowl's digestive system breaks down ingested food to basic components by mechanical and chemical means. These basic components are then absorbed and used throughout the body. A knowledge of the digestive...
Peanut Hearts added to a hard grain mixture ~ 10% ratio to milo/proso/raw rice (equal proportions) can condition plumes against abrasion. The birds would need to be fed this prior to moulting -while the cellular regeneration is going on within the integument layer- before the quills have...
I think that's about right. Try to remember that all scratch grain is not equal. What's the composition of the scratch? Milo is more digestible than most other ingredients. It also depends on what the soft feed is.

_Ah- fast typing- my mistake- I realise they are legumes- what I meant to write is that I thought theirs was a protected protein - producing phytoestrogens at the levels of soy. I know that that is not the case. Peas are a fine source of nutrients. Pigeons, many species of waterfowl...

Volatile Oils

These are some really fine thoughts. I tend to think that scratch grain is all produced in the USA- regardless of who is selling it. That's one of the main reasons I encourage its utilisation. As I mentioned earlier, by purchasing scratch grain we are supporting small family grain farmers that...

Resolution, you need to do a bit more research on feed manufacturing in the USA. There is virtually zero Brazillian soybean meal used in the USA. The bulk of almost every feed manufactured in the USA contains products from the USA: Corn, Soybean Meal, DDGS...

Me, too. Pelleted or processed food has the greatest risk, I think, because the components of these feeds so often come from China, and who knows what's going to be in that? Melamine or whatever else?
What feed are you getting that gets there ingredients from China?

Logically, most of what we'll be covering in this thread is the nutritional value of the various grains and seeds regularly used in scratch grain and something about the natural and agricultural history of the crop species themselves.
While I do appreciate that the thread has been unlocked...
Different Galliformes have different feeding strategies and consequently divergent morphology of feet and bills.
In the following thread, I'll be discussing "scratch grain" it's attributes in poultry management as well as its nutritional inadequacies/ deficiencies based upon common grains used...
