Yes, that would be a better construction wise choice, but my plan is to have only 9-10 chickens.

Thanks, unfortunately in my proffesional work I never needed to learn CADD. Yes scale could have been more convenient. In the next schematic I will use 1 sq=3”. And yes, it is not ALL in the scale! Also, I agree that size 5x8 is odd. The size of 4x10 (other option to get 40 ft2) would be too...

I appreciate your interest in my design. At this time I have just a very schematic drawing of the front of the coop, somewhat in scale for about 9-10 chickens. It is just a second draft schematic. Most likely I will use an old door, which I think is 36” wide, may need to cut it to the desired...

Thank you, read that article, it is an excellent discussion. Based On that discussion I will have my both winter vents placed on gables (one in East and one in west). Before reading this article I thought to put one vent midway up the wall opposite of the wall where is the roost, and the...

Thanks, for your input. I never done shiplap walls. I just wonder if my planks (5/8”x5.5”) may crack when I screw it to the frame because they are not laying flat against the studs. When air leak (through the gaps of butted edges of the planks) becomes draft - any ideas? Thank you

Thank you for your input. BTW, my thinking to use the liquid nails on the edges of the pine boards is to prevent gaps and air leaks, especially in the walls around the roosting area. I followed your advise and imputed some other information in my account.

Thank you very much for following up. Yes, I agree I will build little more than 0.5 ft2/ 10 ft2 floor space for winter ventilation (plus I may have some cracks around door jambs!). I believe that a most common advice of 1 ft2 / chicken applies for summer and not for winter. For summer I...

Thank you very much. Just to confirm, if I read right: overnight in the fall and winter you close all shutters except 1.3 ft2 on the south side. Is that right? That would be 0.325 ft2/10 ft2 of the floor space. On my neighbor (here in Columbus, IN) has a coop which in winter has 0.5 ft2 / 10...

Thanks for your input. I have a premium tripple coated deck screws, which can selfdrill but the head doesn’t imbed by itself (I guess there are not proper cutting ridges on it) and if I make it flush it does crack the board. Sorry I loss the trak how many ft2 is your coop? You say over night...

    Coop design, construction options

Thank you for your input. I am still perplexed about the actually optimal winter vetilation for my area. Seems to me that permanent winter ventilation by 1/2 ft2 per bird would be fine (for southern Midwest states, based on some of my neighbors’ coops). Of course that also depends of how well...

Wow, a lot of chicken coops. Looks like a plenty of ventilation. Thank you for sharing. Can you possibly give me more specific information, like ft2 of always open places in your coop per total ft2 of the floor?! Since in my area winters are in general mild (typically mid twenties but...

Thank you for your input. I will paint my coop also inside and out. Do you see any negatives using “liquid nail“ on the edges of the board? Also, did you use screws and, if so, did you pre-drill board with special drill which makes conical indention for the head of the screw? what did you...

Thank you, will have to think some more where to put my boxes. I understand the potential issue of having less than 4 ft2/chicken, but have to check some more with my several neighbors. I know one has about 2.6 ft2. I haven’t heard issues from him, he keeps his chickens in the coop only...

I thought that the nesting boxes should be on the floor level!?

I get your point, so I may consider 3.5 ft2 per chicke. BTW, The 3 nesting boxes, about 4 ft2, if set on the floor would take away so much floor space, unless chickens could go above it. Tell me how did you come to understand that a minimum should be 3.5 ft2 per chicken? thanks

Thanks for your input. I will use 2x4 for framing. One note, I plan to have 2 or even three nesting boxes on the outside wall. So that add about 3 ft2 area. I read many threads that the size of the floor, when chickens are only kept overnight in it, can be in the range of 2-4 ft2 per...

    Coop design, construction options

I am in the stage of planning a chicken coop for about 10 chickens. Floor size is 4x7’. Plan to have it off ground by about 1-1.5’. The floor will be insulated with R13 bat. For the Top of the floor plan to use exterior plywood 1/2” or 5/8” on studs 16” apart, painted or possibly covered with...
