Oh wow poor bird. Did she heal from that? I ended up covering the hardware cloth with a rubber mat, and 4.5 inches of bedding. I pick up the chicken poo daily with a small rake to keep it clean. To keep the bedding dry I have a 10'x13' clear tarp canopy that I set up when ever it rains. We...
I know someone with a smaller coop without the added run 6 ft total with 3 mid size hens and they seem happy. Also for the rain I'm putting tarps on the side that the rain comes in. It has clear panels as a roof along the whole run and flashing over the hinged areas as well as calking in all the...
That's a great idea, but unfortunately there is a rat problem in my neighborhood and they can just borrow right into the coop as they can build networks underground. I just don't want to risk. I plan to let them out of them out of the coop for an hour or 2 daily to forrage.
Well it will have quite a bit of bedding on it. At least it's better than redoing everything, and better than injuring there feet. Also technically pine bedding is toxic but everyone uses it and seems to work fine. Your Damned if you do your damned if you don't.
I decided to leave it as is and put a rubber mat along the coop floor. I can't believe I found a almost perfect size runner for it. I will have to buy a rubber door mat to make up the 2 ft difference at the end though. It was cheaper than buying more hardware cloth as that stuff is getting...
It's a avituvin coop plus run extension. 12 ft long by 29" wide. Set up on a frame made of 2x4 boards with hardware cloth attached. Under the coop/run frame is gravel and sand to even out the lumpy ground and lift a bit to prevent mud and water in the coop. I'm in the Pacific NW where it's...
Hmm your right. Maybe the hardware cloth and frame need to go. So many things to consider. I'm going to look up how the apron idea works. Hopefully I can salvage the hardware cloth I used on the frame
So I attached hardware cloth to a 4" deep frame that my coop+run sits on. I realize hardware cloth can injure chicken feet. What can I put in the run area? I was thinking gravel so they won't dig down with dirt on top of the gravel? Or bedding, or sand. but with sand I don't want to have to...
