Oh goodness. The article I was meaning needed a glossary is simpler - it was the one on Pyrethrum/Permethrin insecticides. It had the following terms that should have been listed out. Permethrin: A synthetic insecticide Pyrethrins: A collective noun describing the multiple different compounds...

This article would have benefited from a glossary of terms!

Thanks. Saving that for a bit later when I go out to sit in the chicken garden. Edited to add: Read it. :gig :gig

Sadly not. It was an English School so there was not much emphasis on Scotland and Wales (though Ireland always seemed on the front page). I just looked them up (Wikipedia) and something about the side-bar tolls rang a bell so it may be I just wasn’t paying attention! It was definitely the kind...

Yeah. I opted for social and economic history. As a result I only know the order of the kings because some of them have numerals after their names. They didn’t seem very relevant. But I know a lot (well in teenager terms) about the spinning Jenny, the Soho cholera outbreak (the water pump)...

Thanks for sharing. Interesting read. I had to write an essay on the Diggers (or maybe it was Levelers more broadly) at school as part of ‘British Economic & Social History’. Or maybe it was an exam question.

Glad you enjoyed it! I thought it was my boiler exploding in the basement and I don't feel the need to experience that again.

I share your pain on the digging. I had to dig up a patch of textile cloth and a long thin PVC pipe. Every time I thought I was getting somewhere with the pipe I would lift one end to try and bring it to the surface and it had become too heavy to shift. Then I would look up and find that the...

I hope they enjoy it and leave some for you! It is related to tarragon and you can use it as a herb in sauces etc. I just added mine to stir fry or beans.

Yes. Mine self medicate it seems! It is also a prolific grower and quite tasty - I had it for dinner myself a few times last year but it is still too small and low to the ground for me to harvest. It will eventually outgrow the chickens’ mowing abilities and grow to about a meter tall so I can...

It was a lovely sunny day here today and things are beginning to turn green. My ladies were very busy all day digging stuff up and eating artemisia, worms, and grass. Some photos as I haven’t paid tax in a while.

Of course there are. Allergies are highly complex biological responses that are not well understood. I just find it amusing that my mother - who was just going on an instinct she had not to be too prudish about dirt - in particular soil as she was a committed gardener - actually may have some...

That was always my mother’s argument against criticism for me eating with muddy hands as a kid, or for eating fruit that had fallen on the ground, or veggies from the garden that weren’t properly washed. Trace elements she would sing out happily and ignore criticism of her mothering skills...

I am not up to writing an exam essay but I suspect raw greens may positively impact the gut biome as well as providing trace elements, vitamins and fiber. My guess is absence of greens in a chicken’s diet is therefore negative. That said, the statement is rather overblown as surely breeding...

I don't know why he told people they got the right answer - that feels like spreading misinformation to me!

It didn't look staged to me either and it was very distressing. However, I would personally far rather someone look something up than confidently assert the wrong answer. I always appreciate when a doctor or vet looks up the correct dose of something rather than just going off memory for example.
