Thanks Alalele-
I did spend all day calling all the vets within about an hour and a half of my house. The cheapest one charged me I think $27 or so for the fecal float and didn't have the meds: I had luckily located the ONLY feed store in southern Maine to have it in stock, another 45 minute...
Lillith is totally recovered, as far as I can tell. She's eating, pooping and acting totally normal. I suppose she (and all the chicks) might have some internal intestinal damage that may be a problem in the long run, but it's not evident now. They're all acting totally vigorous and healthy. The...
thanks everyone!
silkiechicken, yeah, it was a really sudden change in Lillith, too!
dlhunicorn, I have AviaCharge 2000 and will give it to them, along with plain organic yogurt, after the Sulmet. I have one chick who's seemed to have a malabsorbtion problem for several weeks now (and...
oh did you have Dr. Hoenig?? He is SOOOO nice. He helped us last summer when we were campaigning the city to change the zoning ordinance: he wrote a letter of support to the City Councilors. Today he hooked me up with some experts at Orono and between the two of them I got more good, specific...
It's coccidiosis!
Fecal float test confirmed. Had to drive 45 minutes away to the only feed store that had any Sulmet... but we got it.
Lillith had actually improved by the time we got back. Whether it was the mash we'd gotten down her earlier, or -as the vet said- she was just getting through...
Just got an email from a poultry expert that the State Vet forwarded our case to. He says he thinks it's cocci as well, get the fecal sample, treat all, but that once there's blood in the stool it's usually "too late" to save that bird.
Does anyone have any experience with birds surviving...
Got her to eat a little bit (maybe an eighth of a tsp) of peanut butter by putting it into her beak.
I got a fresh stool sample: very disgusting and runny and mucusy but no blood. I am taking it to the highway-robbery vet at 3:20. In a way I hope it is cocci or worms or something we can...
thanks- I called them and they're very nice. trying to help me locate a less costly vet. what we're running intop is that while some vets can maybe do the test, they wouoldn't have the MEDS for treating it.... so they don't want to even run the test.
yeah, he was talking about feeding the other chicks the medicated feed, not Lillith.
But I still thought they needed to be on medicated feed by 3 weeks to make any difference....
I'm waiting for a new poop, and will take it to the EXPENSIVE vet when I get one. None of the "regular" vets will...
thanks. been on the phone an hour trying to find someone who will do a chicken fecal float. Waiting for calls back. The only one I found so far is an hour away and charge almost $30 for the float and then another $30 if they need to do a gram stain.
Lillith has perked up somewhat. Maybe it's...
She finally pooped. At first I thought it was just a loose stool (could see white urates, clear mucusy/runny stuff, and soft dark poop...) but when I stirred it up I saw this dark-reddish-orange stuff. Is it blood? OH NO! What does that mean??
No swelling that I can see. Last night after we brought them inside, my DD noticed a tiny spot of blood on near her nostril- on the comb area. it didn't wipe off, so I suspected some type small wound, but it was pin-prick size which is why I'm thinking it may have been a sting. But no swelling...
Thanks dlhunicorn. I am trying to keep her hydrated. Do you think plain water or slightly sweetened is best at this point?
Could it have been a bee sting?
Her crop is now full of water but she's not passing anything.
More info if needed:
Feed is a mix of the organic grower they'd been on and a new bag of Dumor chick starter that we've been mixing in for the last 10 days or so. As noted she was outside for 30 minutes yesterday eating grass, etc. No herbicides/pesticides but there was corn gluten applied to...
(edited to add at 8:00 am: She is really in bad shape... Just huddled on my lap with eyes closed and her head hunched up against her body. If I put her on a table she just sits down and huddles there. Please if anyone has any advice let me know!! This is my daughter's favorite chick!!)
We had a...
