Best meat birds, NOT Cornish cross

@WNYfarmfresh That may actually be the bird I’m looking for, if I adjust my acquisition-harvest timeline. I keep my flock of layers, and I wouldn’t mind having a meat bird a few extra months if they’re also laying eggs. Only problem is, I’d need another coop for all those big chickens! 😂

Man, CornishX are freaky looking 😂😂😂 thank you for the pictures! So, they grow slower, but are you saying that your Brahmas don’t eat much more than a standard chicken?

Best meat birds, NOT Cornish cross

I have a ton of freezer space, but we are notorious for biting off more projects than we can chew every year😂 I wouldn’t want to lose track of time and have a bunch of projects overlapping and have a harvest get pushed out(and cause the birds that were supposed to be harvested early to suffer)...

Quail are by far my favorite wild bird to eat. Tiny, but delicious. Haven’t tried domestic quail yet, but that will likely be next year or the year after

Best meat birds, NOT Cornish cross

My worry with the Cornish cross and other chickens bred to grow is not necessarily early harvest. It’s late.

Best meat birds, NOT Cornish cross

@Egghead_Jr I am not interested in CornishX because they grow at such an alarming rate... and like you said, they need to be harvested within a narrow window. I’d be completely happy with a bird that is ready to harvest by 20-24weeks, but could go longer if things got busy or if we wanted to...

Best meat birds, NOT Cornish cross

@U_Stormcrow Thank you for your experience! I’ve been considering a dual purpose, like Orpingtons or Barred Rocks. I’m just raising birds for my family. Primarily for eggs, meat is secondary(as birds are more work per pound to clean than a four legged furry critter). I’m also not super...

Best meat birds, NOT Cornish cross

I think you stated it... I’m leaning pretty hard away from the CornishX because of poor breeding standards. The growth rate just doesn’t seem natural to me. I don’t mind something that grows a bit slower. I feel like it’s been messed with less, you know? Than you for your input! I’ve been...

Interesting! Do you know how long it takes them to get to full size? I’m wondering if the amount of extra food it would take to get them to grow would be worth the extra 2 pounds of meat or so!

Best meat birds, NOT Cornish cross

Considering adding some meat birds to our flock, and am wondering about some of the best breeds for meat, apart from the CornishX?
