It can take a while! It took my Speckled Sussex cockerel about six months before he started crowing. At first I had no idea what that noise was, that sounded very rough!

Whenever a chicken is opening its mouth and stretching its neck out, it is not trying to make any noise, rather it would be gasping for air like I explained. Pretty common to see, chickens can be fast eaters and get food stuck in their throat.

I see it now. I thought that maybe @Auma's chick was a d'Uccle that was not bred properly for its plumage variety.

He looks like he might have a plumage color similar to a Buff Brahma. At least, that is from what I can tell, of course we cannot know what his feathers will look like until he replaces all of the down. Some cockerels stay with a sweet personality, most do not unfortunately, but I hope yours does!

Is he a big eater? I have a rooster who gobbles up food so fast that he starts choking and gasps for air . . .

Can you get a video or picture of it? If you cannot send a video, then multiple pictures would be good or multiple screenshots taken out of the video. Crowing is more like throwing the head back slightly, then as they are crowing, lowering the head back down while the chest is slightly puffed...

That is strange. When cockerels are trying to crow, they actually make a crowing noise, which sounds horrible, very high-pitched and screeching, but it is still their practice on crowing. Are you sure he is not gasping for air instead? Silence coming out is not normal.

Just popping in to leave a note, but here is a fun fact: Sebrights are hen-feathered, which is a mutation that only about two breeds have where the males will not have any male-specific feather shape. This means the males do not have pointed feathers and do not develop sickles!
