Anyone successfully healed a broken leg on a duck?

New update... It's been 7 1/2 weeks since I discovered Bubble's broken leg. Since the setback a few weeks ago, she's been doing great. Putting her full weight on it and walking/running. Tonight I went ahead and removed the splint. I still have her contained in the small pen (2 ft x 6 ft) just to...

Anyone successfully healed a broken leg on a duck?

Monday update. I didn't go pick up the Meloxicam because I couldn't get to the vet before they closed. Likewise, because I had some other business going on all weekend, I didn't get around to culling Miss Pissy Pants either. This morning when I went to clean her cage and feed her, I noticed that...

Anyone successfully healed a broken leg on a duck?

After checking her again this morning (no change in her setback), I feel pretty sure it's a dislocation in the hip or knee. Whenever I touch her between the knee and hip area, she reacts as if it hurts. Oh, and her foot on the injured leg is noticeably colder today and doesn't react to touch at...

Anyone successfully healed a broken leg on a duck?

Well I think we've had a setback. 😕 This morning I noticed that the vet wrap around the splint was falling off. I also noticed that the ends of the popsicle sticks had come uncovered and were digging into the sides of her foot. So I decided to unwrap it all and redo the splint. Under the...

Anyone successfully healed a broken leg on a duck?

Good news! The vet said that the bone was perfectly aligned and healing well! 🙌 She still has another 3 - 4 weeks with my homemade splint on before we can even think about taking it off. However she is putting a little bit of weight on it which is a good sign. Vet said I can go ahead and move...

Anyone successfully healed a broken leg on a duck?

It's been over 3 weeks since I discovered her broken leg. Appointment is tomorrow to get an x-ray and see how well she is healing. She still isn't standing on it really... She's also molting, go figure.

Anyone successfully healed a broken leg on a duck?

Yeah, I change the puppy pad every single day but I also spray out & wash the bottom of the cage since poop inevitability gets under the puppy pad or sticks to the side. Then she ends up sitting in it because the cage is only 18" x 24". I have a larger cage but I've been hesitant to use it...

Anyone successfully healed a broken leg on a duck?

Just a quick update... Bubbles is NOT a gracious patient. She hisses whenever anyone walks into the room. She also tries to bite any time you reach into the cage. Ungrateful hussy... However, she IS eating again so that's a good sign. Still not really putting any weight on her leg if she can...

Anyone successfully healed a broken leg on a duck?

My attempt at the splint. I cut a popsicle stick in half and wrapped it with vet wrap to give it some padding. We placed them on either side of her tarsometatarsus, wrapped medical tape to hold them in place, and then wrapped the whole leg with vet wrap. I gave her some Metronidazole and some...

Anyone successfully healed a broken leg on a duck?

I have a small quarantine cage that I use for sick chickens. It's 24 x 18 in. I will try to splint it and see how it goes. Right now I have her inside a puppy pen in my sunroom with 3 young ducklings but I can't keep her there overnight.

Anyone successfully healed a broken leg on a duck?

This is also what I'm concerned with... Her foot feels both hot and cold at the same time.

Anyone successfully healed a broken leg on a duck?

Thanks... That's what I needed to know. If it's not likely to have a good outcome, I'd rather not put her through more suffering. We have too many ducks anyway. DH is griping about shelling out $$$ for a duck we don't really need and whose chances aren't good even if we try. I'm trying to be...

Anyone successfully healed a broken leg on a duck?

I do have non-stick gauze pads. Is that the same thing? I also have popcicle sticks and vet wrap. As for antibiotics, I have Metronidazole and maybe some Amoxicillin. I can't take off work tomorrow so I'll have to have my daughter take her to the vet for me. I couldn't get good pictures...

Anyone successfully healed a broken leg on a duck?

I'm at church now so can't get a picture until I get home. I've been gone for a week and DS has been caring for my animals. Got home after midnight last night. Went out this morning to feed and found one of my Welsh Harlequin hens flopping around on the ground. Her leg is clearly broken...
