Using this as a coop... conversion?

The "Hoop Coop" has a LOT going for it. I keep looking at them myself, though I have tools, building skills, space, and lots of birds - if anything, the number of birds I have may be the biggest deterrent - but I still think about building one as a "see and be seen" grow out coop, inside the...

which is why I said I doubt anyone would use it. It would have all the use of trying to store a tote above your car in the garage, only less width, and less ability to move around, or clear floor space. Different when your barn is 30 or 40 foot wide. In a shed? Waste of materials.

You are absolutely right - hay was the usual storage up there, a "hay loft". and in a larger structure, it makes sense. Plenty had large second story doors and a block and tackle to lift and manipulate the bales into place. In a 10x10 hen house (or smaller), I have doubts most people are...

It wasn't a great idea, but it wasn't a bad idea, either. It's "complicated" - as is usually the case when trying to modify something purpose built to do something else. I think all of us understand the attraction - I'd never buy one, but that doesn't mean I don't walk thru them in the parking...

Two things about converting plastic sheds (no, I've not done it). One, the walls tend to be hollow, and few people have tools specifically for cutting plastic, so most wont get clean neat edges AND there's no structural strength once you punched your holes - its like a hole in a hollow core...

And Ducks don't Roost, as I'm sure you know. They nest on the ground, so make certain you leave some area for them which is not underneath your chicken roosts. My ducks are stupid, they will Nest almost anywhere, including in the middle of the pathway right next to the gate, so everyone walks...

As it turns out, I just left Lowes. At least in my area, they appear to be discontinuing and discounting all their display sheds. So while I am still not fond of them due to the lack of overhang on the roof, and I need to add significant ventilation, the price right now may be as good as you are...

Look to your roofing materials - if you are buying a 10' long panel, then planning on (almost) 2' of overhang means no cutting. ;) Do keep in mind, of course, that the further you overhang w/o support, the more the roof will sag. Aesthetically, not great. Might want to consider some form of...

^^^ It is known. In Nov, I had 29 birds. Now I havez 50. I haven't bought any... Did I mention the 12 potentials in the incubator??? ALWAYS build as big as you reasonably can. Much easier to find things to fill it than to add on later.

...don't ask me, I'm making everything match my barn, and burying the house. so i can plant a garden on top. Nothing I build is pretty.

AGREE. Admittedly, there are things about this that don't make it optimum for birds, its primarily a goat pen, but some basic tools and some basic skills, you can erect something both fast and functional. Or you can go the hoop coop method, if your HOA will tolerate. That requires fewer...

Honestly, Build it yourself. Buy a door (MUCH easier than building) Wood prices being what they are right now, go with a metal roof. Less labor intensive, too. The only thing that has going for it is that its easier to punch clean holes in than the plastic sheds. I have yet to see a prefab...
