I felt bad for her, having to be culled. I don't know how many generations feral she was. But I do think she was just ready to be on her own and because she seemed to still be teaching, I didn't catch it. She had a different culture than my domesticated chickens. Or maybe she was a serial...
Friday morning Hayden let the hens our just before sun up, I went out later when the sun was high enough to see and found one of the black chicks dead. I don't want to go in to detail as it was pretty gory. There was a hawk on the fence a little later and it got the blame.
Yesterday...
I think Hayden has pictures of T-Boy on his phone, if so I will try to post them tonight.
Last night the big hens and T-Boy went to the coop early. This left over an hour before it started to become twilight here. So we decided to let Midge and her chicks out, since we were both home and...
I think the chick she hatched 1 1/2 years ago. Remember Midge was a feral hen around other feral chickens. So we really don't know if T-Boy has her genes. None of the chicks have shown any problems so far, God willing. :fl
All 15 chicks are doing well. They are feathering out and are still hyper. On occasion. a chick will jump on Midge's back and try to stay on as she walks. (Hen surfing). Being hidden as newly hatched chicks, they where taught to drink from mud puddles, so now they stand in the water bowl and...
Midge will allow me to pick the chicks up, however I get a nice, little nip from her when I do. She is letting me know that she is aware that I have one in my hand and can do a LOT of damage if she dislikes what I am doing. She also gives me the "stink eye" when I pick one up. No looking at...
Hayden, went out this morning and did some work on the broody pen. As we had no idea we were brooding chicks and hadn't in a while, the pen wasn't ready. It still needs work. But to give you a rough idea: behind them is the pen where the adults sleep and lay eggs. All around them is the...
Oh, yes. They are together in a see, no touch cage in with the rest of the flock. I have always hatched this way. I use broody hens only. Except, the hen and her eggs are in the broody box to start with. This is the first time a hen has sneaked eggs and hid to brood and hatch her eggs, that...
Hello everyone. I first got Midge, my bantam feral hen, because in less than 2 days New Orleans was going to be hit with, what was thought to be a cat 5 hurricane. It came to my attention that a bantam feral hen and her 1 chick was in someone's garden and no one seemed to know who this little...
