The leghorns are daily layers, except for a month or two in the winter. So, yes they laid eggs until they got sick. I don't need to do a necropsy to know she has ascites. If you are ever dealing with it, you'll know what I mean by that. It is very obvious in her. And now that I think back...
Since this has happened now to two leghorns in just a few weeks, and I got them together from TSC, I'm quite certain it is genetic in this particular group. I've been reading up on it, and it is a hereditary disease, generally indicating heart disease. I don't think it's necessarily common...
The hens I have gotten at Wilco have been great layers for at least 3 years and then still laying after that, just less per week. They all slow down during the winter, and I think that's true no matter where you get them, unless you are using lights and techniques to keep your birds laying. I...
That is a really good idea, and if you find any, let me know where. I have always gotten my chicks from Wilco and they have always been healthy and lived long lives. I have 3 Australorps from there that are 7 or 8 years old now. I only bought these 4 leghorns at Tractor Supply and will never...
I'm losing a chicken too. 😥 One of my leghorns. She obviously has ascites, which is what killed the last one. I think this batch has a bad genetic history. I got them at Tractor supply a couple years ago. So just a word of warning. It's hard to watch and I'm debating on putting her down...
Oregano took over one of my veggie beds one year, filled one whole end of it. We had to take it out. No kidding, one little plant too up at least 8x4' of space in one year's time!!! I love fresh oregano, but until I find another place to plant it, I won't have any.
I did plant a 4' section, two rows, of parsley this year -- seeds that is. Hope they come up. I think I'll get 8 or 10 plants out of it, can't remember now. lol Then cilantro across from it for 2 rows. But that's all the space I had for it. I have 256SF altogether, but have planted beans...
Wow, that's a lot of birds to lose in one year. I hate losing one.
I have the door open during the afternoons for the chicks to come outside. So far they are not interested in leaving their safe space. All the plastic is down from the outdoor portion of the coop so they can see out and they...
Basically, if I need to pick up a hen to look at her, I go in when she is on the roost. Same with the rooster. They seem much calmer in there. They do come running around my feet when I come out. After all, I am the treat lady.
Thanks @rosemarythyme. Nice to know it's just personality. I do think the set up has something to do with it because I can't physically get into that portion of the coop. I can walk into the rest of it, but that area is smaller and more compact, but still lots of room for the chicks.
It's...
I have never thought about planting grains in the chicken yard. Good idea. Might do that but the straw won’t protect it here. The chickens love that stuff. There are a lot of green forest groundcover type plants in there so it is green all summer but they might like the grains coming up.
So much better when they have growing mates. These three are inseparable.
Well, off to the dentist to pick a night guard I'll never use, but paid for just to get my dentist to stop harping at me about it. I don't grind my teeth at night!!!
When we get home, hope to let the chicks outside for...
We bought 3 Buff Orpingtons from the Farm Store. They are about 8 weeks now and I just set up access to their own area outside for some nice sunny afternoons. They are still a bit small, so I have to worry about aerial predators. It's a nice day today, but I won't be home for a while, so not...
Been out creating a fenced path to an isolated outdoor section for the little chicks. They are 8 weeks old and should be able to go out. :wee Just waiting for the sun to come out before opening the door. Took care of the rest of the normal chicken chores while I was out there, so we have the...
No frost here and seeds are planted. Always a big experiment around here, so we'll see what happens. Just need to soak the parsley seeds before planting, so they will get planted tomorrow.
Welcome @Starrponies! :frow
Weather has turned nice here, and no freezes forecast for the rest of the month. So, I'm planting seed today. :woot
Yesterday was cleaning day for the coop. Now that I have taken over the chicken chores again, there is a new (old for me) standard to be kept...
