Sorry this is so late :hide
Lovely to hear your 4 are doing well :clap
Yes it does sound like it could have been after lockdown but before they had chance to absorb the yolk. Here is an article you might like to check out ~...
You could open the egg up and have a look, I'm afraid it's not sounding good if the chick is not moving when you picked the egg up. Check out this link I left you earlier ~https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/step-by-step-guide-to-assisted-hatching
You should be able to open the egg from the pip...
If it pipped 2 days ago can you see you any movement from the chick?
Have a read of this article ~https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/step-by-step-guide-to-assisted-hatching
It has lots of info on when and how to help.
Yes that's fine, it won't hurt anything pecking at the egg. Hatched chicks encourage the unhatched to get a wriggle on. Good job you were on hand with the chick going in the water, they can so easily drown so you did the right thing by putting a taller one in so they can't get in the water...
Your others will be fine, this is what would happen in nature. I've not had problems with them bashing them about and it's gets pretty full in my bator ~
Sounds like the umbilical could still have been attached. This can sometimes happen but they tend to dry up and fall off by them selves. If it's not coming out of its butt it could just be general hatch gunk. If it's the umbilical just leave it be and don't pull it, this could cause the innards...
That's great news that the chick hatched its own :D
As for it being black that can be down to what the parent birds breed is. I'm not very good on genetics etc but you can cross differing breed/s colours and not get what either parent bird is. Do you have any action from any other eggs?
They should be fine on their sides, are you hand turning? That's how I used to do mine before I got a new bator with turner. When I get to lockdown they come out and go back in on their sides to hatch. Good luck with your hatch :fl
It sure is nerve wracking but the end results are so worth it...
It has pipped at the wrong end of the egg. They should pip at the fat end of the egg not the pointy end. It has more than likely pipped on day 19 as it needed oxygen. Usually they pip into the fat end of the egg and into the air sac on day 19 ish, this is called the internal pip. Once the oxygen...
I believe you are on day 20, day 1 is counted after a full 24 hours of incubation. Let's say (for example) you set the eggs on Monday at 9am, day 1 would be Tuesday at 9am, day 2 would be Wednesday at 9am, day 3 would be Thursday at 9am and so on....
Hearing chirping and seeing wiggling sounds...
:welcome Glad you could join us here!!
Everything sounds good so try not to worry, I know that's easier said than done!! Incubating and hatching is every emotion all rolled into one!!
My best advice is to sit on those hands and let nature take its course. Good luck with your hatch :fl
Hope...
