Oops! Kinda surprised, either they really wailed on it or it wan't as sturdy as it looked. Have had the fraying happen, but that was using eyebolts as 'pulleys, getting things lined up just right can really help. Yes, have seen that one.

It did look to be metal...and anyone who could figure this out would have covered that ;-) Just out of curiosity, have you tried to open in from the outside? The others I saw were probably here on BYC..... but sorry, no, I don't have links.

Have seen a couple of these...pretty slick. I would be concerned about an animal being able to open the door.
