Topic of the Week - Keeping Chickens Cool in Summer

The quick read I did says they work with the weight of the animal and that size is important due to that. I doubt a chicken would weigh enough for these to be a viable source of cooling.

That's what I use for ice blocks......but some people don't live where they sell sleds. I also have a couple shallow trays that are made to put under water heaters.

Might have to 'convince' them. I held one of my birds so she was standing in the cool water, she fought a bit, then I swear she heaved a huge sigh of relief and relaxed. She 'taught' the rest of them that it was ok.

A draft when it's 80F+ out is not the same as when it's 30F out.

Yeah, the panting is scary until you get used to it.

Panting is normal, so is holding wings away from body. As long as they are fairly active, like when you toss a few treats, they'll be fine. It's when they stop moving upon being stimulated that you need to do something more drastic.

I may have to try it here then. Figured it wouldn't help much, or make things worse, at 80% humidity.

Does this really help when it's humid...like say, 50-80% humidity??

Thanks. I wish I had an extra freezer and/or refrigerator. Semantics, maybe, but a 'bottle' to me denotes a vessel with a smaller opening than the rest of the container.....how do you get the 'ice cube' out? Maybe cut the top off?

I never let the fan run overnight, it gets shut off when I lock up after dark. More of a fire fear than the chickens being in a draft if/when the temps cool overnight, tho that is a legitimate concern too. I wonder about freezing bottles...or rather refreezing bottles after they've been in the...

Is it humid there? Agrees on the ice water....but slowly melting ice cubes is another matter.

Topic of the Week - Keeping Chickens Cool in Summer

My birds are confined with no great deep shade for last half of the day so I have to be vigilant during heat waves. I do have shade cloths up on run, which helps, but still not deep shade. I put out large shallow pans(~18 x 18 x 2") of ice cubes late afternoon, they walk in and sit on them and...
