Just to give an update: Tim is doing great. I literally hand fed him for maybe 10 days. He was actively hungry but I think his beak hurt. His depth perception is off because one of his eyes - though it totally works - seems to be slightly angled towards the outside. He was drinking water on his...
I also intervene with the babies. My hens like to sit on 30 egg nests?? so if I find them, I pull the excess and incubate them to give all the eggs a shot. Obviously I'd prefer to find the nest when I can eat the eggs but cest la vie. And then I lock up the moms with the babies because too many...
I definitely didn't mean to the point of killing each other - otherwise I wouldn't be hand feeding this guy mush food haha. Usually the boys will squabble occasionally but the loser really does bail and it works itself out. And if it gets to be too frequent, I make an effort to sell some of the...
The big guy I posted on the other thread was already here - someone before me raised chickens and then kinda lost interest I guess - and I was told he was probably half game half orpington. And his mom was still around too, who looks pretty much like a game hen. I might be able to dig up a...
Normally I'd agree with you, but since I intervened and separated him (not due to behavior...our houseguest was complaining he sat right outside their window and crowed all morning), I feel responsible for this particular situation.
I'm wondering how to market them now. No one in my area actually wants GF; they want layers. And in an attempt to prevent people ending up with birds they hate, I've been emphasizing the GF aspect, which means I'm overrun with birds - fine because I have the space but I definitely dont need all...
That makes sense. We've had some purely docile chickens and they never seem to survive unless I keep them strictly penned up, so I've been tending towards game-ish ones.
apparently very heavy on the 'ish'
I have probably 20 game cocks and they all cohabitate just fine since they join the flock at birth and a pecking order is established fairly naturally. The only issue here is I separated this guy, and, after that, I shouldnt have let him back out with the others. The peacocks and roosters...
UPDATE
Tim and I were spending some quality time together and I noticed that on his worse side, there is a section of exposed bone or beak that isnt on the other side. Pictures will explain it better than I can. I circled it in one image. Not really visible in the picture is the fact that...
I intend to keep him locked up with his ladies from now on. No more free ranging for him. The coop has a run and isnt over crowded so it should be fine. My other pens have too many birds in them for living but are acceptable for night time use with free range.
EDIT: missed your question. He is...
I'm going to try to answer all the questions asked in the pinned thread so bear with me if any is irrelevant. (tl;dr at the end)
Tim is a gamecock with a smidge of orpington somewhere in there, young maybe a year/year and a half, his spurs are 1.25 inches. I didnt weigh him but he's the same...
