    Day Old Chick - Slipped Tendon or Splayed Legs?? I Need Your Help PLEASE

    I would keep the chick the the chick care for longer,but my hopes had risen! Just some advice- the chick chair needs to have access to food, water, and heat still. You can connect the food and water to the chair, but make sure the chick can't drown in the water!

    Whatever seems to help soothe the pain. Just out of curiousity, can post a picture of the chick chair? I have never made one and want to see one acually in use instead of just in diagrams. P.s you are a great chick parent!!!

    Sorry I didn't respond sooner! There is a number of reasons why your yellow chick would have respitory problems, from early hatching to lack of energy. All I meant was to watch for other symptoms, and isolate if other symptoms of Mareks disease occur. Your chicks look so cute snuggled up together!

    That is perfect! Make sure that s/he does not put the hobble off during the night/day, where you are (it is almost midnight where I am) and you may put the bandages back on the feet to help fix the curled toes, although your chick will be fine walking like that. S/he will be a bit wobbley like I...

    Day Old Chick - Slipped Tendon or Splayed Legs?? I Need Your Help PLEASE

    Watch your other chick, the one that has breathing problems. That is an early symtom of mareks.The disease is spread with chicken dander, and can be spread VERY easily to another adult flock that you may currently have. If you notice a lack of interest in food, paralysis in the wings or legs...

    Mareks is an airborn disease that is not transferable to humans. It is extremely contagious to chickens and even more contagious to chicks. Make sure you disposed of the silkie properly. Are your other chicks vaccinated? Sometimes the vaccine doesn't take and that would explain the first chick

    I'm so sorry about your silkie yellowblack... I recently had to put both my chicks I was raising down due to a rare concentrated blend of salmonella in the joints passed from the eggs from the breeder we got them from. );

    Day Old Chick - Slipped Tendon or Splayed Legs?? I Need Your Help PLEASE

    Yes, it looks like a pretty bad case of splayed leg. Without treatment, the chick will never walk and will die. BUT we can treat it pretty easy with a hobble. 1) take the chick by the back. It is easier if you have another person to hold him/her, as chicks don't like to be on their back for very...

    Just some basic info- are the chicks sexed, and do you know if they have been vaccinated againist Mareks disease? This is important, the vaccination part, anyway. Mareks is fatal, and it can show its self with paralysis in the joints first.

    No, it is probably the legs.. the joint is bent and the chick doesn't seem to be able to move them. A hobble wouldn't necessarily hurt, but... that might not solve your problem. Curled toes are the least of the problems right now I think, but you can keep the bandages on if it doesn't interfer...

    If you could get a picture up that would be great. I can probably tell if it is a splayed leg or not. By the way- I started my chick on a hobble 3 days after it hatched, so the hobble will still work if you have applied it properly. Was this chick a late Hatcher?

    Also- s/he will neec acess to heat, food and water still. S/he will need to socialize with another chick that won't hurt her (for my treatment I put another chick with a broken leg with my chick) and put marbles in her water to prevent drowning. Chicks with hobbles are VERY clumbsy

    Day Old Chick - Slipped Tendon or Splayed Legs?? I Need Your Help PLEASE

    I had a chick with a hobble, got her walking normally luckly! If her problem is due to a splayed leg, it happens because there was slippery floors like plastic or foam in the incubator/brooder while the leg tissue was soft enough to spread out. I recommend that if your floors are made of those...

    If it is splayed leg,make a hobble and provide electrolytes in the water. The legs will fix themselves in about a week
