NOTE - just went back and realized this was a thread from last year... my most recent set of babies has just come out of the nest a couple week ago. The babies in this thread are all grown up now and living in luxury in the flight aviary.
Rio, parakeet babies are born completely bald and...
They are born completely naked - they look like little aliens - all head and tummy and not much else. And the eggs are tiny - about the size of the end of my pinky finger.
So cute only a mother could love... and she did! The mom stays in the nest and broods the babies and the dad brings her...
Just an update... The blue baby - a day older than sibling - has fledged today after a couple of days of sticking his head out to check out the big world. Mom and dad are just sitting there looking at this guy like 'where did YOU come from' - too funny!
Here's pics of the blue baby
Oh, and...
GENERALLY speaking the cere color can tell you the gender, but it's not 100%, especially in lighter colored birds or mixed birds that aren't the typical green or blues.
Also, a tip is that the more barring on the head, generally the younger the bird. As they age, the bars on the head gradually...
I feed mine regular parakeet food as their staple diet.
I also provide 'egg food' - not for laying eggs, but it's a treat food that has egg meal in it. They love that, and have really been going for it since the chicks hatched.
I also give them green foods - romaine lettuce and/or cilantro...
I'm not hand raising - tempted to try, but I don't have the time right now with everything else going on.
We will keep them, unless someone volunteers to take one. I am taking out the nest box when they are weaned and fledged and hopefully that will give mom a break for a while!

I suppose the recipe is:
1 male parakeet
1 female parakeet
Proper feeding and fresh water
LOOOOTTTTSSS of patience and time.
We have two parakeets - one (buirdy) that found us, and another (lavendar) that we got as the 'buy a cage, get a free parakeet' deal when we had to buy a new cage for Buirdy.
Buirdy came to us one Sunday morning. I had a migraine and was out on the deck trying to get away from the kids and...
