Yea, school's out for summer! (almost).
Is there a reason you have the cups right at ground level? I would think it easier for the chickens if they are up several inches.
You can slow that substantially by having the water in a dark enclosure.
Eight coops! You are a chicken rancher! :)
I've only been a Yankee since '79. Born and raised just south of L.A.. Didn't have chickens there, moved a soon as I graduated college. Wouldn't need to worry about winter water there.
Good suggestion. I'm make a replacement for my winter waterer using horizontals this time instead of verticals (I've had them fail for unknown reasons) and occasionally freeze. That one was their year round water source until the nipples failed so they have had a heated dog dish the last 2...
You could, GASP!, get a couple of cups and a couple of horizontals and the chickens can choose to use the ones they like best. Which might be BOTH! And if that is the case, they will have the "less likely to freeze" horizontals for the colder parts of winter.
The birds are panting because they are hot not because they are thirsty. They need some way to cool off since they can't remove their down coats. Some use fans, sometimes blowing over an ice block. Some us sprinklers or misters, some put ice in the drinking water. Shouldn't need to be mentioned...
Right. I've seen my girls drinking rain drops on the underside of a pipe gate .... 10 feet from their waterer.
Cups are more likely to freeze than vertical or horizontal nipples. I've heard the horizontals are less likely to freeze than vertical. I have had problems with verticals failing (no...
