Primarily, the Buckeye is a very muscular bird. A good one will have muscular thighs and wings. Muscles need more protein to grow properly. Just ask any human body builder...
When growing, especially in the first 16 weeks, they need at least 28% protein for optimal growth. It is also best that some of that protein be animal protein.
