Laying hens with "water belly" or "ascites"?

It sort of looks like that but hard to say without being able to physically examine her. She looks a little sick though. Is she laying? Eating? Acting normal otherwise? If it seems like she has a lot of fluid buildup, you could try to drain her and just see.

Laying hens with "water belly" or "ascites"?

Eggcessive is right, you should just barely have to puncture the skin. I don't know, I don't think I would be trying to drain her so often. Not sure what brown stuff means, might be bleeding, or who knows. If she were mine I'd wait til she's really full of fluid before draining.

Laying hens with "water belly" or "ascites"?

I doubt that she could have developed an infection from a dirty needle, but yes it's always good to take precautions. We usually did give an antibiotic...one day before, and two days after..but I don't think it's really necessary.

Laying hens with "water belly" or "ascites"?

I don't know what sterile ascites is, you mean no infection? There shouldn't be an infection, unless it is egg yolk peritonitis. If it is that, yes, there would be infection, and I suppose it could smell bad if it's bad enough. The egg yolk peritonitis is what causes the cloudiness, from...

Laying hens with "water belly" or "ascites"?

Well, I was told that egg yolk-ey fluid means internal laying. :( And there, I'm not sure what to tell you to do. If there's anything you can do. You might try re-posting under the emergencies section and title it "internal laying" and see if anyone has any suggestions.

Quote: It really depends on the individual and what the problem is.. We drained Bitsy in April or May, I think it was... and then again in September...but she badly needed it again when she was killed. Draining really didn't bother Bitsy at all.. but some report that it made their hen sick...

Quote: Thanks, so far, they are. It's been so dark and dreary when I am out there, and they haven't been out..but tomorrow's supposed to be a nicer day. I will try to remember to bring my phone, I'm so bad about that! Thanks for being patient. :)

Laying hens with "water belly" or "ascites"?

Quote: As far as the Milkthistle, I gave Bitsy 1/3 capsule twice a day when she was really swollen, and when she was less so I gave her 1/3 to 1/2 capsule per day. Usually when I gave her the Zyfend I did not give her the Milkthistle too unless it was really bad. Shabana (who used the Fusol)...

Laying hens with "water belly" or "ascites"?

I will try to get some today. I let the chicks and their mom out last week, and she did not stay with them at night. First thing, one of them got eaten. Or at least I guess so, because he disappeared. We're thinking the skunk again. Anyway, I think the three remaining are hens. One...

Laying hens with "water belly" or "ascites"?

This is gross, but actually explains some things for some people who might want to know more about ascites. I looked at it again while eating lunch....:p Necropsy: Graphic. Ascites (fluid filled abdomen) after illness Darn, Idk why it won't post the link, but anyway, that's the title of the...

Ohio. We have not had AI here, but don'[t want it, either, so the State has us locked down. I can post pics of the chicks but I know from experience that they will change colors and markings as they get older. I'm hoping they are all hens, but not sure yet about that either, of course. They...

Laying hens with "water belly" or "ascites"?

Thank you again. I have four chicks right now, there are three that might end up with his coloring, hard to tell just yet. If I can get more that look like him, I will let you know, although right now due to bird flu precautions we're prohibited from exporting out of State. Still there's...

Laying hens with "water belly" or "ascites"?

Thank you very much everyone. Well now I know. I found Bitsy dead in a corner of the barn. She had been killed by a predator. I believe it was a skunk, as we have had a lot of problems with them digging under the walls of the barn, and I found a big hole in the back of the barn where it had...

And this is Captain. Likewise not the best picture, but ...anyway, chicken grief (such as it is) is short lived. He's back to normal today.

Laying hens with "water belly" or "ascites"?

This is a very bad picture of her. Light was not very good and this was during the time when she rarely left the barn. When she was outside, I never seemed to remember to have my phone or camera with me. Anyway....here she is. She never came back. I don't think she is broody as she never...

Laying hens with "water belly" or "ascites"?

Bitsy came up to the front garden by the house yesterday afternoon, first time she's done that in a long time.Tthe weather has been beautiful. She has been getting around ok, but retaining a lot of fluid. We reluctantly decided to try and drain her again this weekend though I've been dreading...

Laying hens with "water belly" or "ascites"?

I think vitamins in the water is good advice. All you can really do is just watch her at this point, which you already are doing. hard to say what her issue is, but I agree, it doesn't soulnd like Ascites, at least not yet. I hope she returns to normal.

Thank you both. I let her out again today. She is still acting like she's not feeling great. But she's eating and walking around. But so cute to see the older roosters coddling her. Our alpha rooster Captain is awesome, he's the king and everyone knows it, lol. He stays close to her as much...
