The Right to Grow and Raise Your Own Food

Excellent post, Mich! I consider the right to grow my own food to be an inherent right as a human. Anyone who thinks otherwise obviously has some ulterior motive, as someone raising their own food is most likely not hurting the nosy person in any way.

The Right to Grow and Raise Your Own Food

I see no difference in someone coming into my home and trying to take my food by force (bad call), and attempting to stop me from growing my own food (also bad call). Either would meet physical violence.

The Right to Grow and Raise Your Own Food

There is a pole yard (pole treating plant) about 7 miles from me, "as the crow flies". It's been there for years, but in the last 2 or 3 years, they've changed the preservative they use to treat the poles. The new one smells awful. I mean near sickening. And there are houses just across the...

The Right to Grow and Raise Your Own Food

That depends on your definition of "city dweller". If everyone felt this way.....no chickens, no small garden, total dependency on someone else to raise your produce/meat/eggs for you.....where does that leave the average American citizen? If one cannot have the freedom to own a few chickens...

The Right to Grow and Raise Your Own Food

I agree....up to a point. What offends one/some, may not offend others. I'm not big on coop-cleaning. I was raised on a broiler farm, so my 16 hens/2 roos don't create near a smell to me. Once you've walked through a broiler house occupied by 18,000+ chickens, in the winter, with the curtains up...

The Right to Grow and Raise Your Own Food

Sadly, self-sufficiency is nowhere near the top of anyone's list nowadays.

The Right to Grow and Raise Your Own Food

As far as individual "code enforcement officers" (read lazy-and-not-willing-to-get-a-real-job) are concerned, votes hold no sway. "They're just doing their job", as has excused trashy behavior for years. A stick wielded with some skill would hold far more sway than a vote. Yeah, I know, it's too...

The Right to Grow and Raise Your Own Food

Great post, RaZ! In your situation, if your yard is surrounded by privacy fence, keep a mallet handy and play Whack-a-Mole with nosy neighbors..... As to the "ordinance officer", (what an envious title), I'd ostracize, ignore, whatever, until they were ashamed to show their face. What planet...

The Right to Grow and Raise Your Own Food

As to whether or not the system's broken, there's no doubt.....it's gone! What I meant was a rhetorical (so to speak) view of your post. You asked if what you posted was a reasonable argument......I question where in the world they reach out and grab these "powers" to start with. I daresay 90%...

The Right to Grow and Raise Your Own Food

I confess I have a difficult time being objective in such discussions because I live out in the sticks, and cannot imagine having to live in a neighborhood with neighbors, be they good or bad. My whole point is that we all could find something about our neighbors (if we have any) that drive us...

The Right to Grow and Raise Your Own Food

Sounds reasonable to me, but it's like fixing something that ain't broke. The burden of proof/argument should lie with those who want to infringe on the rights of individuals. In other words, I'll have chickens on my land, I'll have goats on my land, and I'll garden on my land. And I'll...

The Right to Grow and Raise Your Own Food

I both agree and disagree....how much land should one have to own before "earning" the "right" to raise food animals? And is there not a vast difference in raising a few chickens and raising a couple of hogs? As to doing what is right for our society, well that's a highly debatable topic in...

The Right to Grow and Raise Your Own Food

A quote from Open Range......"Man's got a right to protect his property and his life, and we ain't lettin' no rancher or his lawman take either." Not trying to take away from the OP's perspective, but I feel that much of the situation now being faced by American citizens could have been...
