Lets talk about our current broodies :) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Quote: I'm sure they'll hatch! And yes, you can sneak some local chicks in-but you need to do it shortly after or during her hatch and just watch her with them...she'll either tuck them in under her or peck them away!!

Quote: You really want to seperate her from the rest. You don't want any other hens getting in there when she gets up to eat, drink, or poo and laying an egg. You can candle those eggs easily...there's a really nice thread (and sticky) called Chicks are here that is very helpful in the...

Well, here it is...the hatch that lasted 4 days. It started with 1 hatching Friday night, 2 on Saturday, 2 on Sunday, and finally the last one on Monday evening. One of the six chicks died shortly after it hatched and was all yellow. But 5 made it! I ended up seperating the babies from the...

You could always just take her off the nest and put her outside once a day to let her poo-that's what I do. They get to stretch their legs and do the poo outside...there's no way that I could have broody poo in the house Mine get their routine down fairly quickly and are done in about 5...

She'll keep 'em warm. Temps are supposed to be warming up soon too! In my experience a hen will sit and sit and sit. I had one set for 45 days until she hatched out some chicks. Quote:

Quote: I would just clean the nest/area and leave her be. If it's cold you don't want to give her a bath and run the risk of her getting a chill. She may be dirty but she will dry off. It's most likely her rear end that's dirty and not her broody belly area. She should be fine. Just clean...

Quote: I decided ONE time that I wasn't going to candle and it just so happened that none of those eggs were developing. Of course I didn't know it and my poor Wookie girl sat for 23 days...and still no babies. So I candled them just to see and they were all bad. I gave her more eggs to sit...

I've got my first broody of the year and to be honest I thought it would have been one of the other experienced mothers. This is this australorps first time at being a mama. I had noticed her "thinking" about going broody for about a week and a half before she ultimately committed to it...now...
