Advice on breeds please. Raising chicks for the first time in Utah!

I have posted on Sex-link threads but have not made a page. I did it out of curiosity. You can't breed a Sex-link to get other Sex-links. They don't breed true but lay just as well. This is a good thread on it if you are interested...

They are really the same. Red Sex-Links are the result of various crosses. These crosses the males hatch out white and, depending on the cross, feather out to pure white or with some black feathering. Females hatch out buff or red also depending on cross, and they feather out in one of three...

Advice on breeds please. Raising chicks for the first time in Utah!

I was working on a project many years ago with Red Sex-links. These are the Andrew sisters. The Rhode Island White is Patty, the Rhode Island Red is LaVerne and the Red Sex-link is Maxine. They always stuck together. This was my Red Sex-link project many years ago.

I don't know for sure if their website is still up, but Good Shepherd poultry has some beautiful heritage BR's.

Advice on breeds please. Raising chicks for the first time in Utah!

Most birds will do most anything for treats. When they learn something they will do it, such as pecking at a window because they know if they do, they will get some treats. Lesson learned.

Most chicks are sexed so you could get a male but probably not. I'm assuming you are buying the chicks from a store such as TSC. Most hatcheries have a 90% guarantee that the chicks will be females but you could get a male but again probably not. It would be my luck though.

You have a good list to start with. Down the road you can always try another breed if you desire. I don't know what your goal is. Maybe just for the eggs and pets.

Advice on breeds please. Raising chicks for the first time in Utah!

Australorps are nice birds too. My very first birds were leghorns. They are usually quite flighty. I still have them. Red Sexlinks are nice too. Their best egg producing years are the first two. After that they usually slow down. And again, good luck and have fun...

Advice on breeds please. Raising chicks for the first time in Utah!

I want to apologize to you. I do get defensive when someone paints all RIR's as mean or bad. In the nearly 50 years that I have had chickens I have had RIR's and never had a mean one. As far as your colder weather maybe you would want to consider breeds with close combs such as Rose Combs. I...

Advice on breeds please. Raising chicks for the first time in Utah!

Matt is a humble but very wise fellow who gave me my start with the Reds many years ago and I have kept them pure. Years ago I went to a show and saw his birds and we made an arrangement for me to get a quad from him at another show. I had some Reds prior but not as nice as his. I sold my other...

My birds originally came from the president of the Rhode Island Club of america. Matt Ulrich, a top RIR breeder. http://jimspetsandpoultry.weebly.com/ This is Gladys a RIR cross beak. She is a love and will jump into our lap to be held.

I don't know how long you have had chickens, and you may have gotten a mean RIR but you're pretty much saying that all RIR's are mean, and it not true just because you happen to get a mean one and may know someone who also had a mean one so that means all RIR's are mean. It's just not true. Good...

Maybe I know the breeder. I know most of them. I can say having birds for around 50 years that If you got a mean one doesn't mean that all Rhode Island Reds are mean as was implied in previous posts. Good luck and have fun...

I also raise Rhode Island Whites and White Leghorns. They are both my best layers. I don't think color plays a part. Opportunity does though. A hawk got into one of my grow-out pens. It didn't kill any the the young Rhode Island Whites but did kill several Rhode Island Reds pullets that weren't...

Advice on breeds please. Raising chicks for the first time in Utah!

You can get mean birds from about every breed. Just because the bird is a Rhode Island Red doesn't mean it's going to be a mean bird.

They were probably from a hatchery stock. Mine are lovable but they are pure (heritage). One of my RIR hens that was a champion at a show waiting to get her picture taken.

Advice on breeds please. Raising chicks for the first time in Utah!

My opinion is get whatever breeds you want. Some breeds do better in some climates than others but from my experiences if you provide good conditions most breeds do well about anywhere. I have raised several different breeds over the years and I have my favorites that I raise now. I raise pure...
