Drove to Oregon this a.m. and picked up my new call ducks. 780 mile round trip.
The 4 spotted call drakes and 3 spotted hens, had no idea how light colored the hens are, and love the color of the drakes, plus 1 blue snowey drake, resembles blue fawn to me. Oversize white hen, oversize gray hen...
Just put in dibbs for all of Holderread's remaining call ducks. 10 ducks total, 4 Spotted drakes, 2 Spotted hens, 1 Blue Snowy drake, 1 Gray hen, 1 white hen,, and 1 Blue Bibbed hen. Road trip; driving to Oregon to pick them up. :)
Amykins, they are very scared and skiddish, afraid of people, but they are getting along well with the other birds. This little hen is the smallest call duck I've ever seen in my life. She is adorable, just hope she doesn't have trouble laying eggs, or fertile evgs being so small.
Here are photos of Australian Spotted miniature ducks from Holderread's website. The coloring appears to be identical to the Chestnut call duck. It appears that Dave used this breed to develop the Chestnut call duck.
Thank you Miss Lydia, they are doing great today, put them in the pen with 5 other calls to socialize and get used to their new home, they are the smallest sized of all my call ducks.
Took my babies 3 days to get here. They were suppose to get here yesterday on my day off work, but came today. Put them in a box in my office, they drank nearly a whole cup of water. I love the color of the hen, she has a white chest and underparts that can't be seen in the photo. Very little...
Holderread's 'chestnut' color is a derivative of the silver appleyard/ harlequin color pattern.
Dave calls it a dark silver appleyard color, speaking of the claret/ chestnut coloring on the drake's chest and sides, so I'm assuming the chestnut color is similiar to the American call duck...
So far, am thinking the Holderread's chestnut color is about the same as the British call duck club dark silver color

By substituting 'claret' for 'chestnut' , a google search finally paid off. On page 47 of Holderreads's 2011 duck book, he states that very dark claret colored chests, sides on silver appleyard color, he calls chestnut appleyards. Apparently he created a call version, or maybe I'm getting...
Just got confirmation from Holderreads that my pair of Chestnut call ducks are reserved, will post a photo when they get here. It's shocking all the breeds of ducks that Holderreads will no longer breed this year.
Came across a pair of Chestnut call ducks for sale on line, I never heard of such a color variety, anybody know what they might look like? Did a google search on the color, but no luck.
