Useful power tool for winter clean outs

I have had good luck with DeWalt corded tools, but I don't have any of the DeWalt cordless tools because I bought into the Ryobi cordless 18v line. Anyway, you husband sounds like a very nice guy buying you a string trimmer. My Dear Wife, on the other hand, has no desire to receive any tools as...

Useful power tool for winter clean outs

Yes, I ended up getting 2 Ryobi 18v 16 inch mowers. Actually, only ordered 1 mower, but there were some issues with the order and I ended up getting a second mower for less than the cost of the batteries. So I ended up keeping both mowers. I have 3 acres of wooded property and use my riding...

Useful power tool for winter clean outs

At the risk of quoting myself from 2 years ago, I would like to update my thoughts on this subject. I never went with a catch tarp or poop board under the roosts. Where I live in northern Minnesota, we have maybe 4-6 months of deep freeze and the poo underneath the roosts freezes as hard as...

Never heard of "best reviews." Is it a web site or something? Link available? I personally have 6 different chainsaws that I have accumulated over the years just for work around the house. But I do have 3 acres and lots of trees. My best gas chain saw is a 16 inch Stihl chainsaw and that I use...

Useful power tool for winter clean outs

I like the idea of a catch tarp. I was thinking of using empty feed bags to catch the poo, and then just compost the bag and the poo together. Having said that, I thought the theory of using deep litter in the coop was to not have to use a poop board and not have to clean it out very often...

Yes, I do intend to use my deep litter bedding as compost/mulch for the garden. Thank you for that head's up.

I have not added Diatomaceous Earth (DE) to my wood chips. There seems to be a lot of controversy as to the use of DE. Some people say that DE helps keep bugs away, and others say that it does not work very well. A number of people have brought up the issue of respiratory problems of using DE...

Using the cultivator, or a tiller, to break up the bedding makes it much easier to rake or shovel out. It's also great for leveling out areas where things have piled up and/or where the chickens may have dug holes. I know I use the tiller in the garden to break up the soil before I shovel it out...

Useful power tool for winter clean outs

Since this is my first year with laying hens, lots of my ideas have been already evolving. No doubt, the spring thaw and cleanout will teach me a few more lessons. I am prepared to adjust accordingly.

Wood chips are from tree trimmers and sticks that I pick up around the yard and chip up with my Sun Joe 14 amp trimmer.

I have a 40v tiller something like that. But I don't use the tiller in the coop because the tines of the tiller might rip up my linoleum floor under the wood chips. The 18v cultivator I use has a back and forth action and it allows better depth control. Also, the tines are not very sharp and...

I am hoping that there will be lots of worms in the 12 inches of leaves I dumped in the chicken run this last fall. In the spring, I will out there with my mini tiller and see what it turns up.

I have had so many comments about a poop board that it has me thinking about what might work for me. One idea is to make a poop tray under the roost and line it with empty feed bags. The poo would drop on the feed bag, freeze, then I suppose I could remove the bag and poo all at the same time...

Useful power tool for winter clean outs

My original plan was to only clean out my deep litter coop once in the early spring and once in late fall. I think that will work, but I started this winter with about 6 inches of wood chips in the coop and the frozen poo has been piling up this past month. So I had to knock it down before...

Useful power tool for winter clean outs

Well, the people around where I live that I talked to about it did not think it was a very good idea. What do I know? This is my first winter with laying hens and I'm still learning what works for me and what does not. Obviously, where you live plays a big part on how you manage our flock.

This is exactly why I mentioned using the 18v cultivator to break up the frozen poo. It works much better for me than shovels or pitch forks. I have not used my reciprocating saw on the frozen poo, does it work? Not something I think I would reach for to do that job, but maybe I'm just...

Thanks. I see you are also from MN, so how do you clean a wood board with frozen poo on it? I have a wooden ladder for the pop door which gets poo on it and I have to use a hammer and chisel to break off the poo.

I don't know of anybody around here that uses a droppings board under the roost. Dry sand is going to get wet from the poo and when it freezes it will turn hard as concrete. In theory, throwing additional wood chips over the frozen poo throughout the winter should work. That's what lots of...

Useful power tool for winter clean outs

We have a couple days of 38F temps, so much warmer than the past 4 weeks. I only added a thin layer of those frozen chips to the coop bedding. As I stated, I made a mistake not covering the tubs with wood chips. I have been monitoring the humidity in the coop, and, so far, have not seen any...

Useful power tool for winter clean outs

Yeah, I bet if I could video myself making stupid mistakes around the house I would probably have a good following on YouTube. It was a mistake not to cover the 17 gallon tubs of wood chips. I had planned on making a pallet shed with a tarp on top to keep out the rain and snow. That would have...
