Udate!...still need a bit of direction please..

I checked my girls last night and didn't SEE any mites on any of their faces. It was in the high 40's for temps, so they wouldn't have been dormant because of cold. I'm feeling a little hopeful!! Quote: It will be 7 days since the dusting with Sevin this coming Tuesday. I think I'm...

citychickx6, I think I'd rather have the lice than the mites. At least you know you can treat the hens and be rid of them. Lice don't infest the coop! There's some good news! I noticed two of my girls are flicking (for lack of a better descriptive word) their heads every 10 - 20 seconds...

Rancher hicks - Just wondering, what do you use to distribute the DE? I have a large shaker container but it doesn't get cracks or walls well. I too have a 50# bag and have used DE but not in large amounts. Before the infestation I had been sprinkling it just on the floors before I put fresh...

Hey citychickx6, Have you seen the mites on the hens? I was able to see the mites when I went out to the coop after dark. It's very helpful if you can inspect your girls and determine what type of mite you are dealing with. Like I said earlier. I couldn't see any mites on any of them when I...

Well, I dusted the girls with Sevin (straight with no extra DE added) yesterday. I hated doing it. It was, so far, my worst experience with owning chickens yet. I used the "grab their legs and turn 'em upside down" method. Felt terrible doing it.. and I always talked so tough about chicken...

By the way, thank you littleoak for your input. I appreciate it very much. Off to TSC to find Sevin.

But none of them had mites visibly ON them when I inspected? Do I still dust them? What about the coop? Does dusting the coop/nest boxes cause Sevin dust to get into there lungs eventually?? I guess I can't believe there are mites since when I looked for them in the daylight I didn't see...

I'm must be tired, forgot to add this to my last post.. I think she is finishing up her molt because her head has a lot of pin feathers on it. I read somewhere that a pale comb can accompany moulting. OR.... could she have pin feathers on her head because of the mites??? Is that a symptom...

Thank you for your time Dawg53! I've read a lot of your posts which have been extremely helpful and I have previously studied those links you listed. I just came in from a thorough check of each bird. I looked all around vent and at feather shafts, I looked under wings and behind neck. I...

Ok, one more thing... I read about all this dusting with mite killer going on inside the coop... dusting the bedding and nest boxes and I assume leaving it there.. doesn't this cause a hazard for the hens? I mean, doesn't this stuff get stirred up with all the daily activity inside a coop and...

Udate!...still need a bit of direction please..

Sigh.. I'm tired and overwhelmed with information because I've been reading threads for hours very late last night and all morning now. I found "bugs" on one of my BR's face last night using a flashlight. I haven't done the full body check on the flock yet. I'm assuming it's mites but maybe...
