    Poultry Predator Identification

I lost another chicken to a predator yesterday. I don't know the time it happened, but I suspect during the day probably late afternoon. I was missing a black Silkie hen from my backyard flock when I closed them up at dusk. I found the poof of feathers by the fence under a tree with just the...

    Poultry Predator Identification

I just wanted to share--if you are missing a chicken, even if you find a poof of feathers, don't give up looking. I heard a ruckus from my free range chickens, went out and found my bantam hen missing. I searched the property and found a tiny poof of feathers in an open area. It could have...

    Poultry Predator Identification

Raccoon, right? Could it be a fox? I let my dogs out this morning maybe at 6:00 a.m. No excitement from the dogs--a very protective pit bull and three mini Dachshunds. All the dogs, especially the pit bull, check out the chicken coops. The pit is looking for animals to drive off. He's...

    Poultry Predator Identification

First a picture of my beautiful, sweet Brewster. I am still reeling from his death. I caught the medium-sized raccoon pictured a couple of nights later and broke down and released him--ya, I know--far away from farms and houses along a river. That's two raccoons that have been removed from my...

    Poultry Predator Identification

Now, to why I came to this site today. Neither my husband nor I remembered to close up the coops that houses my FAVORITE ABSOLUTELY FAVORITE old bantam cochin rooster. I thought he did, he thought I did. His coop is not 20 feet away from my bedroom window. All windows were closed because...

    Poultry Predator Identification

I just wanted to add that when an bird is attacked, they drop feathers. If you've ever seen a bird of prey hit a bird in mid air, you'll understand--there is an explosion of feathers. I imagine it is a defense mechanism--if something has hold of the feathers, they drop them to escape.

    Poultry Predator Identification

Stray dog? You weren't home..... By the way, my PIT BULL is fine with all my chickens. He chases the deer off the property (my neighbor feeds them so I have a huge herd of starving deer all over my property) and has ended up catching a fawn and a yearling that he ended up killing (I got the...

    Poultry Predator Identification

My first guess is a dog. Dogs go for multiple animals, just ripping them up. Other predators go after just one, except something like a weasel but I don't think a weasel carries anything off. Your missing hen might have escaped and be hiding somewhere. The chickens that my (#$*&(#$&#...

    Poultry Predator Identification

I agree. I mentioned to Opossums because of the many piles of scat I found in the area. I was trying to get an understanding if the scat could have been from a big Opossum. There were many, many piles, all with a lot of seeds in them. The make up of the scat could have been either fox...

    Poultry Predator Identification

I think a fox got my chickens. My neighbor lost a bird in the September as well. I haven't had a problem for the past month but I am out in my yard a lot and my dogs are out a lot. My attacks came when my husband and I were out of town--I don't think my son was out and about the way I...

    Poultry Predator Identification

Not all that big, probably the diameter of a cat's. Lots of seeds in it. I was surprised that there was so many piles in such a small area. Don't raccoons do that sort of thing? Defecate in one area? The area was about 15 feet by 15 feet. I was looking for a feather trail, so didn't pay a...

    Poultry Predator Identification

Need some help. I lost three chickens in September. The first was a Silkie in my back yard (that backs onto other 3-acre properties with bush). I found a poof of feathers near the coop about 30 feet from my back deck. I found some feathers on the fence where whatever killed her took her...
