New Brahma Group: Blue Partridge x Partridge, Plus Dark

You can't tell which are black, blue or splash from the chick down. You have to wait till they start feathering in.

New Brahma Group: Blue Partridge x Partridge, Plus Dark

The older girls should make it clear to the boys that they are not 'on the market', so to speak. A good rooster will only pay attention to the hens with bright red combs, indicating they are healthy and available for breeding.

Can you setup a bachelor pen? When you're ready for eggs to hatch, just pick which boy and put him in with the girls for a few weeks. That way, you have better genetic diversity, and you can be certain of which rooster fathered which chicks. Bruno does have absolutely fabulous conformation...

New Brahma Group: Blue Partridge x Partridge, Plus Dark

Start walking through him. Always go out of your way to make him get out of yours. At the moment, he is all testosterone and no brain. And don't bring treats with you everytime you go to see them. Treats equal excitement. Excitement can lead to aggression. You want calm and relaxed, not amped...

The Ameraucana have the muff/beard gene that also inhibits wattle development. Brahma wattles should be fairly small compared to what most breeds have. Your guys look just fine.

They are very slow growers. It usually takes them about 6 to 8 months to reach maturity, and they continue growing until they are about 18 months old.

I think the light one is a pullet, with a mahogany gene. That might be why she's got more of a red tone to her than the typical gold of females.

Some will grab another chick and drag them around by the neck. They just keep at it. Too much. Too intense. And it's only the red boys that have a problem. No matter how well they match my end goals, they will not be sticking around.

New Brahma Group: Blue Partridge x Partridge, Plus Dark

Most of my 13 week boys are pretty mellow, but they don't even come close to having the right color/pattern genes. The 9 week olds, while a few would be absolutely perfect in terms of looks, are just constantly fighting with each other. They are just showing too much dominance and aggression, at...

Since you're showing yours off, I might as well share what I've got. This guy is only 13 weeks old! He's almost as big as his dad, and he's already acting like a proper rooster. The 6 month old pullet in the top photo adores him. I'm trying for a red base color with the columbian restrictor, the...

New Brahma Group: Blue Partridge x Partridge, Plus Dark

Correct. However, the Dark males should be correctly patterned, they will just have leakage. If you were to take the best overall male from that breeding and pair him with Partridge/Blue Partridge hens, he would produce 50% BBS Partridge, and 50% BBS Dark (males will have leakage), since he...

New Brahma Group: Blue Partridge x Partridge, Plus Dark

'Dark' is a silver base color. Splash/Blue Partridge is the same pattern, but with a gold/red base color. A silver hen can only pass that silver base color gene to her male offspring. She would produce a type of red sexlink. All the males would be similar to 'Dark' male chicks, but may develop...

New Brahma Group: Blue Partridge x Partridge, Plus Dark

It's just some 'light' under-fluf. She's just plain old Partridge. Still, a very nice looking girl.

Neither are 'Blue'. Splash birds have two copies of the blue dilute gene. Birds with black patterning have no blue dilute gene. This chart shows how the 'Blue' gene inherits.

New Brahma Group: Blue Partridge x Partridge, Plus Dark

"Blue" varieties don't produce 100% blue chicks. There is always the chance for splash, or not inheriting the gene at all, producing black patterning. All depends on what the parents are. The only way to have 100% only Blue chicks, is to pair a Splash with a black-patterned bird.

You've got a splash Partridge and a Partridge. Pretty girls.

New Brahma Group: Blue Partridge x Partridge, Plus Dark

It's a Splash, and I do think it's a cockerel. And yes, the pattern should be the same. The only thing that changes is the coloring of the patterning, either black, blue, or splash. Were the gold/red shows up should be the same. Just like with a Wheaten/Blue Wheaten/Splash Wheaten; pattern...

I think pullet for now. Not seeing any rusty red on the shoulders.

New Brahma Group: Blue Partridge x Partridge, Plus Dark

Correct. Dark is partridge pattern with silver base color. Partridge is the same pattern but with gold/red base color. And yes, that chick is Partridge, not Dark.

The male coloring is something that will only express in males, so choosing a male with the proper coloring is kind of important. You have no way of knowing if the hens' genes will be able to compensate for an improperly colored male. Sort of like when breeding B/B/S Ameraucana. Only the males...
