Rooster boy constantly swallowing - help

Wanted to update this thread to let anyone know that this is seemingly turning out to be an ear infection issue, which was suggested early on. There was no external sign of ear problems, but upon treating him with a combination of peroxide, Lotrimin cream, and polysporin, I pulled this out of...

Rooster boy constantly swallowing - help

Still dealing with this issue despite adding ventilation and clearing his nose of debris. Could a possible crop issue be ongoing for this long extended period of time (about 6mo now)? Picked him up today when he was head shaking and swallowing and his crop seemed pretty hard. Will monitor...

Rooster boy constantly swallowing - help

After closely watching today, I believe a hen may be "overgrooming" the rooster's head and neck area so his feathers are getting stripped and tattered. At least it may not be related to the swallowing issue. Has anyone had success in stopping this behavior, and how? Sorry this has been...

Rooster boy constantly swallowing - help

Thanks for that, I've been gradually working at carving that stuff out without upsetting him too much. The warm wet qtip has seemed to work well. I didn't think to use a dental scraper, but a toothpick helped a lot. At the time I thought, some people are out training for the Olympics, but I'm...

Rooster boy constantly swallowing - help

I hope that's all it is! The feathers never seemed this raggedy and broken before, but then again the swallowing definitely has me watching his body conditions closer than normal. I may not have noticed poor quality feathers in previous molts.

Yes, they have dust bath with sand and topsoil mix, but he doesn't seem to use it much at all. Oil gland shown in photos, the feathers around it seem sparser and missing more so than normal. Could any of this be associated with the excessive swallowing?

Rooster boy constantly swallowing - help

New issues: broken or missing neck feathers, bald spots on neck/shoulders area, also prominent oil gland on tail - almost like he is over grooming himself. I see no signs of mites and assume these are issues related to the swallowing/head shaking and/or throat discomfort. Also another pic of him...

Rooster boy constantly swallowing - help

I'm still working on getting the hardened stuff off, as you can see it is nearly obstructing his nostril and is like cement. Peroxide doesn't seem to be eating through it much, but enough to be giving him some relief from headshakes and swallowing. I could possibly try some olive oil...? Ears...

Rooster boy constantly swallowing - help

Hey there, I wanted to update to state that administering the peroxide seems to have given him the most immediate relief! I didn't have an empty eyedropper so I put the peroxide in a near-empty systema eyedropper bottle, so sort of a peroxide/systema/saline mix. When I put it on his nostril, I...

Rooster boy constantly swallowing - help

No, not in this tiny cage all of the time. I had them in the broody cage in my kitchen solely to record the videos. They normally reside in a coop-mansion currently parked in our detached garage for the winter. Now that you've calmed my mite fears (thank you), I'll continue to focus on possible...

Rooster boy constantly swallowing - help

Ok, now my hen is beginning to exhibit similar behaviors 😩 I brought them in the house to observe, and caught the following two videos where my rooster sets a new record of swallows, shaking, scratching, picking at her, she picks at him, etc. Could this possibly be some mite I can't detect...

Rooster boy constantly swallowing - help

I will check all of that and doctor with peroxide as you advised. Many thanks for helping me avoid hunting down a chicken vet as of yet. I will get my husband to assist me in looking at the choanal slit. Which may be a challenge as my husband is mortally afraid of the rooster 🤣 Man, do they...

Here is a close up of his ear. I'm no expert so if you see anything that looks off please let me know. @Eggcessive sorry I forgot to state that yes, they have granite grit available 😁

Rooster boy constantly swallowing - help

Thanks, I will run out and give him some coconut oil before he goes to bed. I have had the fan on for them and although he is still swallowing somewhat, he decided to crow today which he has not really been doing since this began last fall. Hopefully it's a sign of improvement! Is there a trick...

Rooster boy constantly swallowing - help

Copy that on the ventilation, thank you both very much. Honestly I have a hard time finding his crop most of the time, but will check it again tomorrow AM. Besides ACV and plain yogurt, if there is anything else I can do to help remedy a potential crop issue?

Rooster boy constantly swallowing - help

Well, their coop is parked in the garage for the winter, I did have a box fan for cool air circulation going out there but did remove it around the time he started this behavior due to cooler weather. Do you think I should put the fan back out there? The garage is holding around 35-40° to keep...

Rooster boy constantly swallowing - help

Thanks for the reply, his crop does always empty by morning but it feels harder throughout the day than my hen's crop (her crop does seem squishier than his). Be it that it is a crop issue, can I give him anything to help him out? No eye bubbles, just brown crusty buildup around his...

Rooster boy constantly swallowing - help

I cannot figure this one out. My bantam boy keeps swallowing and head shaking constantly. Something is really bugging him. I don't think it's gapeworms as he has been wormed with Safeguard - 5 days, full dose. My other chicken is not doing this. I switched their feed from crumbles to pellets...
