Got it. And one thing I remember reading in a thread here is that if you rake deep litter too deeply, that's not good. I wonder if I may have done that - stirred up some of the lower layer that was supposed to stay put.

I always thought "straw" was bad at resisting moisture and mold? I do have large pine flakes I can add. i can get more large litter at a store.

I am so sad & I feel at a loss. I've been working out there on some project many hours of every day - working according to the weather - rewiring the large existing run myself, raising chicks in the house, who are now old enough to move outside & use that new run space DH and I are building...

When this project is done, my next one is finding very clever ways to add ventilation to that tiny roofed coop (the sort of "emergency" coop & run) that's attached to this building. I've read a lot on that here too, and have some ideas, but need to check with people who've actually had to do it...
