    Broody abandoned nest-Day 18!

I wanted to update on our babies who are 3 weeks tomorrow. All 3 are doing fantastic. Momma hen is awesome. They are fully integrated, free ranging during the day and sleeping in the coop with the rest of the flock at night. Watching a broody do her thing has been the best experience and...

    Broody abandoned nest-Day 18!

Their coop is a dog crate which will go inside of an A-frame run with tin covering one end. But it's not enclosed. We moved them in that first night because we had storms. I was worried about sideways rain! Momma is doing a great job with them!

    Broody abandoned nest-Day 18!

She incubated and hatched them in a nesting box in our coop. Once hatched we moved her and the chicks to a dog crate with starter crumbles and water. We had a storm last night so we brought them inside and they've been inside so far today. I'm going to move them out during the day and inside at...

    Broody abandoned nest-Day 18!

Yes, we are allowing momma to raise them. She was out doing her business when we took these pictures. Our rooster is a Gold Laced Wyandotte. The "twins" are from Black Sex-Link hens and the gray one is from an Easter Egger/Ameraucana hen. So we have our first set of mutts! LOL

    Broody abandoned nest-Day 18!

Thank you for your continued advice! The other 5 hens who chose to lay in her nest that day must have sat long enough to keep them alive. Here are the Three Amigos this morning while momma was out doing her business.

    Broody abandoned nest-Day 18!

#3 also arrived today and all 3 are doing well so far. Still no sign of #4 so I doubt we'll have another hatch. We moved momma and babies to a dog crate inside. We are having storms tonight and I felt better having them inside.

    Broody abandoned nest-Day 18!

It's day 22 and we are hatching!! One is completely hatched. One has been about the same all morning. First thing this morning I found the hole facing down into the shavings. I turned it but it was facing down again about an hour later. Is it ok? A third has just cracked the egg. I'm suspecting...

    Broody abandoned nest-Day 18!

I don't think you are judgmental at all! I appreciate help from those with experience in this. I didn't think they would need artificial heat but wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything. I'm in Texas where it can be 70* in the morning and 30* at night! The joys of Texas winters! I can...

    Broody abandoned nest-Day 18!

Thank you, rebrascora! I teetered back and forth about moving her in the beginning but feared she would abandon them and worried about integrating again after the hatch. So I left her. But, after dealing with cracked eggs and digging out new eggs every day I decided if she goes broody again I...

    Broody abandoned nest-Day 18!

We are on day 18 of my broody sitting on a nest of eggs. We started with 12 eggs and we are down to 4. We candled day 10 and 3 of the 4 looked viable. I wasn't sure about the 4th so I left it. Momma hen has only left her nest long enough each day to do her business and has done well. She's...
